Other advantages home viewing has over the theatre:

- For the price of two tickets, I can practically buy the film outright and watch it as many times as I want.

- I don't have to sit through 10 minutes of ads before the trailers even start, let alone the feature.

- I don't have to deal with annoying audience members who either a) won't shut the hell up or b) don't turn their cell phone off or c) bring their children who can't sit still for two hours to the film.

- I don't have to pay obscene prices for drinks and snacks.

I always wondered what the fuss was about home theater setups until I got an HDTV, BluRay, and surround sound system. Now I hardly ever go to the movies. Go figure.

Digital cinema is not that great. We run a small theatre with DLP projector side by side with a film projector for colour timing. You can see or at least feel the difference between film and video. Film still has a richness that video of any quality has yet to duplicate. It is a high end digital projector we have made by NEC ($240,000 range) so it is not the source...

Most people could walk into a theatre and not even know they were watching a film from a digital projector though. A lot depends on the type of film..

Where is your theatre located?

I am in vancouver. I work in post so it is just in our office building, not open to the public. But we use full on theatre gear. Our screen is roughly 30ft wide by 25ft high...

It is nice to watch a hockey game on though!

I usually only go to the theatre when it's a movie I'm really excited for. Batman, James Bond, Indiana Jones type thing. Something I don't want to wait for any longer than I have to.

Thanks for posting that. I just purchased tickets for my daughter and her friends to see Hanna. I didn't realize it was a techinical limitation that prevented Hanna from being shown on more screens when it first opened. I did think it was strange that such a guaranteed money maker was only shown on something like 1000 screens across NA.

So my friend, he's hilarious. He cannot stand when people open their cell phones up during a movie, to people behind them its like turning on a flash light.

So he went with a few of my friends recently to see a movie, he brought with him a flashlight, and anytime someone opened their phone he'd turn the flash light at them.

Needless to say it was hilarious.

I rarely goto the theaters anymore, with digital projectors being so cheap these days I'd much prefer my 102" screen with a kick ass home theater system to sitting in a crowded theater of ass hats.

I'll second that, though I think my screen is actually 103"! Nah nah..

Plus it's harder to get a sitter, and the few movies I'd really want to see in the theater my wife isn't interested in seeing. And I don't really like going to movies myself.

I wouldn't mind checking this out though to see if it's that big a difference.
