For those who don't know, I'm a broadcasting student at SAIT. I recently had the honor of getting to do my first hockey play-by-play. I was pretty pumped because it's something I'm considering as a career. It all went down at the women's playoff game on Friday.

Anyways, I was able to get the recording of the game and ripped a little highlights package from it. Basically, I want to know what you guys think! Obviously for a first time it's a little rough, but I thought I did fairly well (especially considering how bad the hockey was). Any comments or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. As a note, the first goal is the Trojans goal, hence the increased enthusiasm compared to the other two.

You know what, I thought it was pretty good for a first time. I know I certainly wouldn't do that well. Some things I think could be better are:

-You say oh, and stutter a little bit when things seem to get scrambly or exciting. It's not a bad thing but you need to be able to tell us what is happening. On the first goal it sounded like the puck was behind the net and then "SCOOORREEE". Just a little quicker clearer description would be better.

- I think you have a good radio voice, but you need to add some more lingo to your repitore, just to prevent from being mundane. Use different adjectives to describe chipping a puck up the boards, like slams it up the boards, or whips it up the boards, shoots, etc..

I'm no pro, but I think you have potential, please keep us posted on your progress, good work and enthusiasm.

Haha, I still don't know how that guy is so bad.

Yeah I did tend to lose my words a bit when I got excited. Thanks for the comments so far.

I think you did a darn fine job, you certainly stepped in there and sounded like you weren't nervous. I think you could use a little more emotion though, and maybe spice the lingo up a little bit, like flamesdyehard said. Great job though!

That is pretty good for ir being your first time. I agree with the comments above, and think you should try to keep the excitement level up even during the slow parts of the game. You just seem to go from really tame to very excited pretty quickly...if that makes sense.
But you've definitely got potential....good job!

I used to, but being in a radio course I've heard myself so much that I'm used to it now.

It was hard to maintain excitement because this was just really, really bad hockey. Nobody could keep the puck on their stick for more than two seconds or make a pass to save their lives. Really the only excitement was when there was a goal, haha.

Thanks for all the comments guys, it's really encouraging and I'll keep your stuff in mind next time I get to take a shot at it.

I could critique it and make pointers but I'm sure you know what to work on. As a former radio guy you did a very good job on your first time out. Nothing really glaring that sticks out as bad, and it was solid throughout.

If he sticks with it, and gets far with it, that will be something he battles with every broadcast he goes into.

Try calling the game in your head the next time you watch it. If you don't re-use the same phrases within the first couple minutes, you're not paying attention..
