Tiger Woods
Any one hear of this guy? He's a golfer.
Holy frick he is good. Seen him win yet another tournament today, in the World Golf Challenge, where it is match play with the worlds top 64 golfers. He has killer instinct like I don't think I've ever seen in any other athlete. He dominates that sport, like I don't think I've ever seen any other athlete dominate a sport. I don't even know how he can stay focused like he does when he wins that much.
Anyway, I'm itching for summer.

What I find disgusting is that theoretically, through endorsements and winnings, he could be the first BILLION dollar athlete ever...

I'm not sure it is in question.
I saw an article last year ( here it is) that has a LOT of "if"s in it, but it calculated with the $10 million FedEx cup that Tiger has the chance to have a retirement fund with $1 Billion in it.

Personally I find it too bad that he has no company at the top. What was fascinating when Nicklaus was top dog was there were others around to give him a run for his money. Watson, Trevino etc. all had the gumption and game to take him on. And it wasn't because he fell apart as he usually finished in second place to them winning.
Would be a whole lot more interesting if there were a couple of guys with the character to take him on once in awhile. There is a small group of them that seem to have the game to test him but he has such a mental edge on them they just crumble without a fight most of the time.

Tiger has pushed golf to the next level. I agree that it's a shame that no one else has really stepped up. Lefty could be there, but can't seem to hit the gym enough. Mental toughness is the biggest advantage for Woods, I don't think anyone else is even close there.

Isn't this the sports forum? Why is a thread about Tiger Woods in it?

Thanks for the constructive comments....
It seems that every few years someone rises up and challenges tiger a bit... Vijay Singh about 5 or 6 years ago, then Phil a few years ago. This is usualyl following by a year and ahalf to two year period where Tiger is completely dominant. I think as soon as someone starts to catch him, he kicks it into high gear and absolutely demoralizes the guy.
Absolutely amazing thing to watch.

It's funny that many golfers have comented in the past on how they'd love to be in a final pairing with Tiger on a Sunday afternoon. Some get their wish and they fold like a cheap tent on a rainy summer night. They coment on the massive crowds that follow Tiger from hole to hole and all the attention he gets. It's totaly different atmosphere than what they are used to and most say they find it intimidating.

Of course there's that legendary sunday where Bob May pushed Tiger to the limit at the 2000 PGA Championship.

Oh its not in question at all. He has made just under 100 million per year for the last ~4 years. He has earned over 600 Million so far and if I rememeber correctly, he is supposed to be Billionaire within 5 years.

Just disgusting in the fact that it's kinda unprecidented for an athlete to make that much. I fully agree that he would deserve it all for being able to stay on top of his sport as long and consistantly as he has. Just makes my pitiful exsistance seem a little more worthless...

I think people have to appreciate what it is we are witness too.
he may be the absolute most dominant athlete EVER in any sport.
Gretzky/Jordan/Chamberlain or whomever else....by the time he is done will surpass all of them in any conversation IMO.
I say sit back and enjoy it....may never ever see anything close to it again.

That answer is easy. Tiger sucks in the Ryder Cup because it's not for money. Tiger is only motivated to make as much money as humanly possible on a golf course.

Not really true - otherwise he would play a Vijay Singh type schedule, instead he picks and chooses his tourneys.
What Tiger cares about is majors.

I'm amazed by Tiger, but I often wonder if he is an "athlete" in the traditional sense of the word. I know he works out and is in great shape. But to golf, you really aren't going to sweat or have your heart rate go up very much.
Is golf a sport? Or, is it more like darts and bowling (a game)? Discuss.

The question was given serious analysis in a study conducted in 2004 by ESPN.com, and, for golf lovers, the process resulted in an unflattering answer. A panel of experts which included sports scientists from the U.S. Olympic Committee, academics who study the science of muscles and movement, sports journalists and former pro baseball and football player Brian Jordan was polled to identify the most demanding of 60 sports. Various activities were graded on 10 components of athleticism: endurance, strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, nerve, durability, hand-eye coordination and analytic aptitude. Boxing ranked first, followed by hockey, football and basketball. Golf ranked -- take a deep breath -- 51st out of the 60 sports, just behind table tennis and horse racing. It did, however, place just ahead of cheerleading and roller-skating, with fishing finishing last. Those poor fish have no one to defend them. We do.
Jansen says. "The difference is, you can smoke a cigarette while doing it. But it is a game, and it's the hardest game I've ever played.''
