Default An "internal" Domain Question

I set up a website on my computer (winXP Pro) at work using Apache in WAMP as a web server. I would like to demonstrate the site to my colleagues, but I would prefer if I could set up a domain name for our local network only instead of using my computer's IP. So, something like mysite.something without having to register a domain.

How can this be done without resorting to any outside services?

You have to have your own DNS server at the office with all of your PC's pointed to it as the primary. You should be able to manually add a Cname entry that points to your computer name. Your co-workers would then type in "*cname*.domain and it should work.

If you don't have your own internal DNS, it get's real ugly.

Depends on the network setup, if dynamic dns is setup on all the computers and the internal network is setup in the right way, you should be able to use yourcomputername.yourcompanydomain.com, but a lot of things have to be setup properly for that to work.

Or like psicodude says if your company has an internal DNS server then whoever admins it could add a record for that (assuming your computers have assigned IPs).

You could also just try http://yourcomputername and that might work depending again on how your network is setup.

Thanks, guys! It seems that messing with the DNS server is too much trouble, especially since we really don't need it other than this and since both of Photon's suggestions worked. I just can't believe that our IT guy didn't know this...

Thanks again.

When i ran apache off my home computer, i used a site called www.no-ip.com.

Very easy to setup and then you won't have to connect using your ip.

That more for external IP's but in this case Ayrahb was looking for something internal to their network.

It might work with internal IP's depending on how you set it up I guess.

Well you could edit the local host file of every computer (Windows) in your office and add an entry with any domain name you want pointing to your internal ip....

always good for a nice laugh too...on trade deadline day we used to point the sporting sites...so say like britney spears are something....but that was back in the day with only a few computers..

Also it isnt that hard for whoever is in charge of your network to setup and internal domain for you....if they are using linux/apache, just add in an entry in the httpd.conf pointing to your ip address...or even the servers host file...same with a windows server, pretty easy and quick...you may be able to get their with http://yourcomputername
