Default Very Interesting Article: Why Conservatives aren't Profs

Conservatives Just Aren't Into Academe, Study Finds

Divergent life choices may explain the dearth of right-wing scholars

The Woessners have peered into the psyche of conservative undergraduates to find out why so few of them want to earn Ph.D.'s and become professors. Their paper on the topic, "Left Pipeline: Why Conservatives Don't Get Doctorates," is available online and will be published as part of a book published in August by the American Enterprise Institute.

Pretty simple, I think.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

I'd say:

Those who can, do. Those who can't, don't.

That doesn't work with John Baird prancing around Parliament Hill.

Yea, I had Tom Flanagan last semester, and thought he was an excellent prof.

It makes sense. The values and life goals of conservatives rarely line up with becoming a professor. While the values and goals of liberals do.

I also think education helps people become more socially liberal. For example, you won't find too many people with high levels of education that are anti-gay rights.

Always great when someone posts a thoughtful, balanced article, and the very first reply is neither thoughtful or balanced.

I thought the conclusions here were very interesting. The conservative emphasis on family life was a factor I wouldn't have considered. I'm even more curious about their next paper on whether professors' views do serve to indoctrinate students. I have to agree with the conservative on that one, I think they probably do.

certainly isn't alot of intelligence in this thread

and why would someone who is intelligence put themselves on one side of the spectrum or the other?

a key important of intelligence is logical thinking...there are plenty of logical points on both sides of the spectrum...

there is also no place for intelligence in politics!

In my experience, half of the professors i had in university, had no interest in teaching what so ever...

Speaking of logical thinking, this post doesn't make any sense.

Haha, notorious? I'm going to guess you have only read the Walrus article by Marci MacDonald and formed your opinion on that basis.

Flanagan and Cooper are easily the two best profs in the department. World-class minds by any standard.

They're smart guys, for sure. But they're also arch-conservatives. Not many people deny that.

On the other hand, I think it's important to note that academic culture does select for liberals also. The academy is a place where it does matter who you agree with, and academics in the social sciences and humanities (outside of the U of C) are often politically liberal academic marxists. They tend to hire people who think as they do on political issues--it's an unfortunate fact of life.

There isn't enough diversity of political viewpoints in most departments, and even though I'm a liberal myself I think students are the worse off for it. Universities should be places that encourage freedom of thought--I think most people involved in higher education would agree. That's hard when most of the top scholars represent only one political viewpoint.
