Agamemnon,

you are right, the correct term is societal evolution.

as for the prudish/binging british, well all true. i just don't know what else our society could draw from as a 'pure' example...

it is one of the oldest businesses.... the problem will be here whether you legalize it or not. IMO Putting prostitutes into the back streets etc isn't a way to solve the problem . But I am really pro choice. If someone wants to do something, why prevent them? Regardless of wether it is legal or not, i think some guy would pay regardless, it has been proven over history. Prostitution is illegal in many countries, yet it still exists in those countries.

Shovelling this problem under the rug won't help, it will just cause more problems. From my impressions of the papers and just driving around, the way it is now, most of the stuff is done on dark street corners and LOTS of drugs are involved. Hopefully by legalizing it you can get rid of some of these problems. When it is more open, you will have less problems tracking down serial kilers. There is no doubt about this, if you legalize it and create a so called "red light district" guys can't get away unnoticed as easily. In edmonton, they have formed a 35 policeman task force to solve some of the unsolved murders, mostly involving prostitutes. It is a problem.... even here in alberta. Regardless if you agree with what somebody is doing, they are human... i think by doing this we can protect some of these people.

Also by legalizing prostitution, regular STD/HIV checks can be required by the government for all prostitutes. Drugs and HIV go hand in hand. This could lead to an outbreak of HIV/AIDS. I am a strong supporter of HIV/STD prevention and education on these topics, that is part of what I do in life. There will be an outbreak due to the lack of education in some of these prostitutes. Part of the reason that these young ladies get involved in this "business" is because lots of them don't have too many other options to earn money, partly due to lack of education. I feel strongly that if you legalize it, you can help to prevent disease... which is strong on my values. I haven't even touched on pimps etc... that just erks me.

Regardless of how you view moral/ethics of prostitution, there are some problems that cannot be solved by keeping it illegal and IT will always exist. By legalizing it, it will be damage control imo.
