So... are you saying that 'giving up the right to free speech' (which is not really under any serious fire here) is the beginning to Western Civilization's descent into religious fanatacism? Do you actually conceive of realistic secnarios where this could happen? If the Danish newspaper decided not to run the cartoons and avoid offending Muslim's, would this be a key step toward the Islamization of Europe?

I just don't see it. I guess we'll have to wait a few centuries to see what happens. Religion has been steadily declining for centuries, though media attention to religious extremism has sky-rocketed in the past 50 years. Religious zeal goes down, media attention goes up, the public's awareness of religious zeal goes up = people being afraid of the 'rise of religious extremism', when really, imo, we're witnessing the fall of it. Lots of Chicken Little'ing around here.

Sure that's insane. But I think it's equally insane to be worried that a suicide bomber is going to erode my democratic and liberal rights in Canada. Just because someone blows themselves up doesn't mean Canada takes one step closer towards religious fundamentalism (if anything it helps push people away from it imo). Britain has dealt with suicide/terror bombings for a long time and they're liberal-democracy seems to be intact and thriving.

I would hope you would say yes, the problem lies in that the other guys dont think its so insane. Its like a game of touch football, as soon as someone crosses the line with a hit they have to be either dealt with by telling them to get lost or by popping them in the mouth so they know the consequences of thier actions or you have to quit (ie give up).

In this real game of touch football, I for one refuse to quit, and if making that stand means supporting some POS cartoon that I would normally give no more attention then some other BS cartoon, then so be it.

I suppose if the clash of civilizations can be equated to a football game, then our team (Western Civilization) is kicking the crap out of every other team on the planet. By about 1000 times. As far as I'm concerned we should be worrying more about how to be 'good winners'... we've already dominated the economic facets of the world, we consume and produce hundreds of times that of other societies. I don't see any reason to rub the fact that we're dominating the struggle into the faces of the 'other' sides. Can't we win with some class?

By law you're not allowed to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater, or to write/distribute hate literature.

Those seem like restrictions on free speach to me meaning that 100% true freedom of speach doesn't exist, at least not here.
