Default Americans to shoot down spy satellite

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...y/Science/home

It's one of their own. It was defective pretty much from the beginning, and Bush has ordered it shot down so that the 450+ kg of rocket fuel, along with whatever top secret instrumentation is destroyed before it falls to earth. Thats the plan, anyways!

Didn't the Chinese just do something similar just to prove that they could.
I think this is more of a reaction to that than anything else.
I'm pretty sure the Amercians have doe it before, and this is just a friendly reminder to the Chinese that anything you can do, we can do better.

^ from the article

Quote:
Shooting down a satellite is particularly sensitive because of the controversy surrounding China's anti-satellite test last year, when Beijing shot down one of its defunct weather satellites, drawing immediate criticism from the U.S. and other countries.
A key concern at that time was the debris created by Chinese satellite's destruction — and that will also be a focus now, as the U.S. determines exactly when and under what circumstances to shoot down its errant satellite.

Am I the only one concerned that the man in charge of weapons of this magnitude refers to the "Atlantic and Specific" Ocean?

Wow, I just had a spinoff flash of the Cylon's vs Skynet for possession of whats left of the earth.

I can see it now, Arnie as the T-1000 shooting whats her name the blond cylon in the face while Glibbly saying Austa La Vista baby, only to turn around to see a hundred more of them tramping towards him.

yeah, they shot it out of the sky because of the possibility that the fuel tank wouldn't burn up in the atmosphere.... had nothing to do with the possibility of sensitive spy technologies possibly being recovered by the Russians or Chinese. That was one bad cover story.

Come on......

The fact that they didn't say it proves that they are hiding something big. Everyone knows all USA spy satelites are equipped with self-destruct mechanisms. The Chinese or Soviets (errr Russians) obviously got or were gaining control of it. Unable to self-destruct the USA shot it down to avoid losing sensitive technology and information!

So obvious!

Agreed. While I have no evidence to the fact, I find it impossible to believe that sensitive US spy satellites don't have self-destruct mechanisms.

Here is some facts and opinions from the Bad Astronomer. It talks about why they shot it down and why it is different than what the Chinese did. Also it's interesting to note that the missile used to shoot it down didn't have a warhead it in. It just slammed into it and smashed it to pieces. Anyways it's an interesting video to anyone interested.

Also here are some cool photos of the missile launch.
