REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Get ready for the next Big Bang this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS - News) and Maxis today announced that Spore, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7. Spore will be available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and mobile phones.
"The wait is almost over," said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."
Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with the world or explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers.
I am so pumped. I've been following this game for a long time... and it is going to suck me in like a black hole.
If you have never heard about Spore before and want some interesting video to get introduced to it:
I remember getting excited for a game like this a few years ago. It was called Black & White. About 5 hours after installing it I shut it off and never touched the game again.
I'm still bitter about it.
Spore does look pretty damn cool, but I'm gonna stay away untill I can confirm that the developers have delivered what they promised. Personally, I'm just impressed that they finally set a date. Perhaps it will beat Duke Nukem: Forever out the game
I was all up on this game a couple years ago, but it'd been so long since they've bothered to put out any development info or news about the game on the website that I just gave up on it.
What's with the platforms selection? PC, Mac, Nintendo DS and mobile phone? Seriously? DS and phones? Why not release a console version?

I thought Wil Wright was enamored with the Nintendo Wii and was planning a release on that platform.

They haven't announced a release date yet but Will Wright and EA have both committed to the Wii and EA has suggested that Spore will be coming to all next-generation consoles.

Huge thanks to Dion for the signature!
I think Will Wright is the one guy EA will give all the time he wants.
Personally, I would rather wait 3 more months for a better experience as opposed to something that needs a mega-patch 3 weeks after release to "repair" (aka FINISH) the game.
(I'm still bitter about KOTOR2)

I see there's the regular Spore and a Galactic version... what's the difference? Not sure I'm going to purchase this quite yet, still have mixed feelings on the longevity of it.
edit: Difference is as follows The Spore Galactic Edition contains:
Spore Game DVD (PC/Mac compatible)
"The Making of Spore" DVD. An exclusive behind the scenes documentary on the making of Spore.
"How to Build a Better Being" DVD. A 50-minute evolution documentary by the National Geographic Channel featuring Will Wright and Spore.
"The Art of Spore." A 128 page hardback book featuring Spore artwork and stories from Maxis' artists.
Exclusive 100-page Galactic Handbook
Exclusive Spore poster
All in a collectable 'Spore Glyphics' hard plastic box
Not worth it IMO.
Still shocked this isn't on the Wii. Seems perfect for the platform style of play.

Well considering that as a single celled organism at the beginning you reproduce by finding another single celled organism you love and laying an egg that is significantly different than the parent, I'd say this game more closely resembles ID

And the player is god!
I picked it up, played one game for 6hrs, wow time flew by. Gotta say well done by the devs, its great fun and it seems as the space part of the game is going to be the huge part obviously. The earlier stages are quite easy, fun and not really meant to challenge people too much. Apparently much of the early stages, the decisions you make affect you later in game.
It really feels like you are starting a new type of game in each stage, especially world and then space stages.
So far so good, just curious to how long the space stage would play out, scared to find out since this is the sims guy who made the game.
