Default Tragedy of an 18yr old kid, a BMW M5, and a Forum Posting

An interesting, yet tragic story about how an 18 yr old kid talks big on an BMW M5 Owners Web Forum opening himself to the usual spoiled kid criticism. Forum members later piece together news reports to learn that the kid stuffed it into a tree a few days after his final post. 4 of his buddies on board + him - no survivors.

And a link to the M5 board thread where they figure it out. Pictures and video of the carnage:

Tragic, but I think it's safe to say that 500 hp in your 1st car is a bad idea under any circumstance.....

Tragic or just natural selection?

Quoted for extreme truth ... and why my daughter's first vehicle is a 1989 Ford Ranger 4 banger. Not only will it not go fast, there's a limit on how many friends she can stuff into it.

Wow, it wasn't even his car, it was in his dad's name.

Imagine being a parent of one of the passengers.

So very eerie to read those posts. Found a link to some writeups about the 5 victims, along with some pictures: http://www.ocala.com/article/2008012.../BREAKING_NEWS

To think, the last words he typed on that forum were "I'll post pics tommorow..."

MY parents got me a 85 Diesel Landcruiser... the thing did not go faster than 110 and was basically an indestructible metal box... If you hit 115 the thing would shake almost to peices...

It was loud as too.... everyone knew when i was coming...

I would never give a kid of mine a fast car.... because i know how i liked to drive as an 18yr old.

This is brilliant! I wish more parents were as considerate.

Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to chalk this one up to natural selection. It doesn't matter if you are 18 or 55, if you aren't smart enough to safely operate a vehicle, you are going to cause an accident. If it's a high performance vehicle, chances are you're gonna kill someone if not yourself.

I bought my own fast car when I turned 19, after my parents flat out refused to buy me anything. I saved my money for a year and a half and bought a 5.0 Mustang. I admit I drove like a jackass at times, but I was responsible to pay my own insurance and cover all expenses. I think it made me a little more aware of how I was driving and to not push the limit. It also helps when you get 10 demerits in a 1 year span and the goverment sends you a strongly worded letter about getting your license suspended.. Since then I havent had a single ticket and its been almost 5 years..

I post on a few forums and last year one of our members stopped posting. A lot of people had him on AIM, he played on a lot of gaming servers and people would talk to him all the time. One day he just vanished off the internet. A lot of times people just leave forums, but he has had no contact with anyone over the forum over messengers, over gaming servers or anything. Nobody knew his last name, so no one knows for sure what happened to him.

Its scary and sad when its a situation like that, a forum member practically spelling out what his future actions would be and that he'd post pics, even when the forum he posted on essentially said:

"Umm....thats not a good idea man, dont do that."

Granted, some of them were just insulting him, which likely didnt help.

Well, the pics were posted, but not by him.

He said what he was going to do. Most of them told him not to, some of them just heckled him. He went ahead and fired her up anyways. He somehow thought that pinning a BMW M5 on an airstrip was a logically sound and flawless plan.

The pavement dictated otherwise.

What more could have been done?

500hp, RWD....from my experience, most kids don't know how to drive a RWD car safely. Hell, most adults are just as bad. Add 500+ hp and it just spells disaster. Why can't the idiot parents just bought this kid a civic?

I think we should consider a buddy system at CP. Every member gives their real contact info to one other person, and that person is responsible for hunting his buddy down in the event they don't post for a period of greater than 2 months. And, just to make sure that two "buddies" aren't killed in the same car crash, your "buddy" must be someone you don't like and would never hang around with socially (but it can't be someone who despises you so much they would be content to let your carcass rot in the woods without telling anyone).

This way, we can all be that much safer. Or, at least, if somebody drops dead, we'll have a great thread about it. Either way.

Whoever posted about the gaming guy who disappeared from the forum, AIM etc. I was thinking about asking if anyone has disappeared on CP and ended up having died, or something. It seemed a pretty morbid question - but you brought it up

So I'm asking now.

Anything happen around here like that?

Read in one of those articles one of the kids played college football for coach Kirwin Bell. There's a name I haven't heard in a while.

I've been parts of message boards alot smaller where numerous people have died over the years, some natural causes, some accidents, some wars. In fact there was a guy i played games online with for years killed earlier this year in a snowmobile accident.
