I've got a 1950s bungalow
I have it between 19 and 20.5 at high, and 17 overnight or when I am away
If you don't already have a programmable thermostat, get one.
I think my bills in the winter are about 80 - 100 per month
As far as your question, the thermostat wont work so much as you put it, but depending on your comfort level and how well insulated your house/windows/etc is, it may come on more often or for longer.

I've got my thermostat programmed to go down to 18 at night, and back up to 21 in the morning. Great way to save a bit of energy.

I usualy turn down the heat when i go to bed and then turn it back while i'm having my morning shower. Helps to keep the heating costs down. Besides i like it cold when i sleep.
20 during the day and 16 at night.

I have mine set for 17 during the work day and at night, and have it around 19.5-20 when I'm home.
While you are at it, check the relative humidity level in your house as well. Having the recommended humidity can make you feel warmer with a lower temperature, and keeps you and the house healthy.

23, The tenants in my basement suite seem to think its a good temp, as they don't have a separate temperature controls. At 22, it was too cold.

Do you and your family argue a lot?
From Wikipedia;
A study carried out at the University of Uppsala (Sweden), on indoor air quality and subjective indoor air quality (SIAQ) in primary schools, states that perception of high room temperature was related to a poor climate of cooperation. To achieve a good SIAQ, it recommends room temperature should be at a maximum of 22.0 °C (71.6 °F).

It's because we have tons of large windows in our house which aren't those energy efficient ones. Lose lots of energy. We're doing reno's and that's one of the last things on the list.

Condo.
Cranked to 30 so it stays on all the time and we have the windows and balcony door to balance it. Its the only way to achieve a good temp. Otherwise its too hot or if you leave it down at a lower temp it gets way too cold and you end up cranking it and it gets too hot. So the windows have to stay open.

22 from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, goes down to 20 at 10:00 pm. I used to go down to 18, but we were afraid our baby would be a popsicle in the morning.

We have ours at between 23-25 during the day and 20-22 at night, and that is with no big windows in our house.
Seeing all the early posts I can't believe that ice boxes that you folks must be living in. It is bad enough outside with the cold no reason that I want to freeze in my own house.

I work from home so I'm pretty much home all day. From 6:00 AM to 9:00AM on week days I have it at 21, from 9 until 3:30 it goes down to 18 and from 3:30 to 9:00 at night it's at 20. Overnight we have it go down to 15.5. The Programmable Thermostat is nice to have though. When I was on hollidays I was able to heat the house for short periods of time so the cats wouldn't freeze, but not have to keep it at 21 or something like that the whole time.

33 - the thermostat doesn't really work in my Apt, so it settles around 22 as an actual temperature.

Mine's at 15 at night or when I'm away. It's 17 most of the time I am in the house. I run warm, so I prefer leaving the temperature cool. I'll bump it up to 22 when I have visitors over.
