Bestbuy/Futureshop employees
Quick question for all of those people out there working at BestBuy or Futureshop.
As an employee what kind of discount are you entitled to? Are you entitled to a straight percentage discount or is it different on each product?

you do have to work past your 3 months to have the discount activated though

Thats the rule, but they certainly aren't very strict about it.

Here's a question - I've heard you can walk into a Future Shop and actually negotiate on posted prices, like you can do at a Soundsaround. Is this true?

I've seen this happen but I think it's only on big items like tv's, fridges, etc.

In my experience (as a customer) Future Shop seems to be stickier with prices than other places like Soundsaround and Visions.

That's because Soundaround and Visions suck.. and they need the business.

Cost is a padded cost however, not actual cost.

I used to work at Future Shop a long time ago. I had a guy who worked in Burnaby at head office. He said that the computer "cost" is way above the real cost.
I can see that. Good strategy. I remember I got cost + 10%.

Can you further explain "padded cost"?
Thanks

You can negotiate on prices anywhere. It's really a matter of whether or not they want your business bad enough to lower the price. Whenever I purchase and item that costs 50 bucks or more I always ask for a discount unless the price is already ridiculously low or it's at Costco or the like.

Padded cost would include things like shipping charges, warehouse costs, etc.
Meaning if they buy a TV for $1000; it might cost them $100 to get it shipped from the manufacture's warehouse, etc.

Makes sense. Padded cost is more accurate to what it actually costs the company to purchase that product so I see no reason why they would use actual cost over padded cost

So if you go to Underground to buy a pair of jeans you try to negotiate?
A meal at a restaurant?

Sorry, I didn't think were were talking about soft goods and consumables. I don't negotiate at restaurants and clothing stores. Everything else, I almost always ask for a discount if the item is over $50. That's how you save money.
Besides, my jeans don't cost more than $50 a pair. I married a Manitoban. It would be against their personal creed to spend that much.
Shouldn't you be texting someone from the fast lane?

Just keep your hands at 10 o'clock/2 o'clock. Not 12 o'clock/6 o'clock.
