Well apparently I want him to be president.

Yay me. I am guessing he is way too moderate, tolerant, and progressive to be electable. Which is probably why I have never heard of him, and why his politics line up with my own.

Hate to burst your bubble, Flash... but Gravel is actually way too old, grumpy, extremist and crazy to be elected. Also, did I mention he's crazy?

I'm sort of kidding--he's not crazy, but he is kind of a Democratic Ron Paul. He supports abolishing the IRS, and the institution of a national sales tax instead. To replace the lost revenue, he supports a punitive tax on petroleum--just two examples of his policies.

It's less his policies and performance as President, than who I think he is as a person. Granted I've never met him and can't back anything I say with any substance, I just think he's a good person. He's a Ralph Klein type of politician to me, someone who's very real. He's more of an everyday type of guy, than a career politician.

Maybe those are bull reasons to like the guy, but I don't really care. I like the man.

It always cracks me up when people say "George Bush is the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with."

Newsflash: GWB is a recovering alcoholic. He won't be having a beer with you any time soon--or setting foot in your neighbourhood bar for that matter.

At the same time, it's hard for me to understand why being a recovering alcoholic who's been sober for years is a bad thing. It's almost the only achievement of his that I respect.

I agree with both your points. It just cracks me up when people say 'He seems like an everyday kind of guy that you could just hang out.'

Me too. He's the "everyday" kind of guy who was born a millionaire and went to Yale and owned a baseball team. A real working stiff.

I'm pretty liberal on social issues but conservative on fiscal issues. The thing is that most of the social issues I don't really care about too much whereas the fiscal issues I care a lot about. If I was in the States I would have trouble deciding which side to vote on as I think a change in parties is needed but the fiscal side rates higher on my priorities.

Yeah...the previous administration of that tax-and-spend Democrat Bill Clinton was Trudeau-esque in his excesses, throwing money around like a drunken sailor, while George W. Bush the fiscally conservative Republican has been a model of small government efficiency.

As strange as it seems, the Democrats actually have a better recent history of financial moderation. For the better part of 2000-2006 the House, Senate, and White House were all controlled by Republicans, yet they were increasing the deficit to record levels year after year. Other than Ron Paul, who will never win the nomintation let alone the general election, I don't really think any of the candidates are running on a platform of fiscal responsability.

Old, I grant you that but he can't be as crazy as the guy who's won the last two elections.

Pretty predictable I guess. The most left candidates, then other democrats, then Ron Paul the libertarian, then other republicans, then the scum slugs like Huckabee and Romney.

It really is amazing how that fallacy of Republicans and the Economy still exists after the silly amount of spending by Reagan and GWB.

Republicans have spent out of control. I guess they are still seen as pro-market and pro-business relative to their counterparts.

I haven't really heard other people make the same comments as me. I don't have any American friends, and my Canadian friends are certainly no fans of Bush. It's just the way I view him, I think he's a genuine person and I admire him for it. I certainly haven't taken that opinion of him to be popular. I like the guy, most don't.
