Default Report: Bedard traded to the Mariners

Quote:
The Seattle Times is reporting that Baltimore Orioles pitcher Erik Bedard has been traded to the Seattle Mariners for a package of players that includes outfielder Adam Jones.

I can't believe it.

I know we desperately need another 1-2 pitcher in our rotation....but for Adam Jones? Give me a break.

Put me in the camp that doesn't want to trade away top, quality prospects for anyone.

Ugh.

You have to give up quality for quality. Adam Jones is a great prospect, but face it. A good hitting, right handed Corner OF is pretty crap in the grand scheme of things unless he turns out to be the next Manny Ramirez or Magglio Ordonez.

Jones apparently can play a decent CF, but that is Moot considering Ichiro is patroling there and doing a damned fine job of it.

Left handers who fit in at or near the top of a rotation are hard to find ... probably harder than corner outfielders. I know he's a good prospect but Bedard is proven quality.

That said, Seattle has a nack of bringing high end talend and wasting them. see Richie Sexton.

This trade was rumored for SO long....and it finally goes through.

A steep price to pay for the Mariners, now it's time to see if both players pan out with their new clubs.

I'm not sure any player knows with any confidence where they will sign once thier current deal is done, particularly if its with another team.

Well a key thing for the Mariners is that I think they feel that they can win their division right now if their pitching is improved. If they can couple Bedard with a budding Felix Hernandez and move the other guys like Silva, Bautista and Washburn down a notch on their staff it should benefit them as a team. Down the stretch last year their pitching did fade on them as their starters didn't give them enough innings and by the latter part of August that bullpen was pretty taxed.

I think you're the first person I've ever heard of who mentioned the words talent and Richie Sexson in the same paragraph. Maybe I haven't paid enough attention to the M's, but he's the big first baseman with about a 200 avg and a ton of strikeouts, no?

Correct, the local boy who did bad.

Played great with Milwakee, signed his big deal in Seattle and has layed an egg ever since.

You think so...he had a poor season last year, but the previous two years in Seattle he had 39 and 34 home runs, 121 and 107 RBI. His 2005 OBPS was the second highest one he'd ever posted in a full season. In 2006 his OBP and SP were not too far off of his career averages. Safeco is a much tougher field to hit in than Miller Park is, and the AL West features 3 parks that aren't easy to hit in whereas the NL Central where he was playing is hitters paradise. He's a big guy with a long swing, and it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that as age catches up to him his production will start to wane. And his strikouts last year were actually down from what they've been in the past.

I realize that you have to give up quality to get quality....but Bedard better turn out.

And we better sign him to an extension ASAP.

Well as of right now no ones saying much and it's being stalled.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7726024?MSNHPHMA

Getting Jones out of Venezuala a month before Spring Training might have been a good move anyways given the cooky things that occur there quite regularly.

he did have better years in 05 and 06 that's for sure, but it seems that if he doesn't get on base, he strikes out ... must be that big strike zone.

anyway, don't want to take this too OT, and easy for me to say but I would have spent my money somewhere else.

This would be good news for my buddy who's an outfielder for Seattle's AA team in Tennessee. Clears his path to the big leagues and raises him a spot on the team's top prospects list.

Apparently the only thing holding back the trade from happening is a last minute effort by the Orioles to sign him.
