Vancouver Schools shut down: 15cm -1C
haha, i know everyone in Calgary is dealing with the extreme cold, i don't even want to know what it is with the windchill today, i heard a high of -26?
But hopefully you can laugh at Vancouver to warm you up. Out here, it's -1 and there's about 15cm on the ground and ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED!! I havn't been up to UBC so i don't know the amount of snow they got, but the secondary schools around me are all closed.
I know this isn't quite the army being called in, but it's still laughable how useless people are out here in the cold.

A couple of years ago we were in Vancouver for Grey Cup and there was what I'd call a "minor snowfall" the morning we were leaving. Watching people try to drive was funny, but it wasn't that funny at the airport waiting for them to figure out what to do with all that white stuff.

... Any particular reason why, or do folks in Vancouver just avoid work and school on 'snow days'?

Usually it melts with in a day, there is usually about 2 or 3 big snow dumps a year, at least since i have been coming here on a weekly basis for the last 3 years...i guess the cost isnt justified.

Yeah, like Mel said, it just doesn't happen often enough to justify having a crap load of plows and salt trucks on standby. There are a few, don't get me wrong, but its not enough for a city of this size.
I left for work this morning at 4:45am, I didn't get to work till 5:30, the trip from my house in North Van to my work just outside downtown usually takes me about 15 minutes with no traffic. The roads were pretty bad, even the highway was just covered in the white crap.
You Calgary folk may laugh at us, and I understand, but its just something that we aren't used to, as it never happens. There was a couple winters like 5 years ago or so where there was barely any flakes, let alone accumulation of snow.
As far as the schools being closed, I got no issue with it, why send thousands of people out onto the roads when it is truly dangerous to be out there. And SFU being on a freeking mountain doesn't help either.

Because it doesn't snow enough to justify buying the equipment needed. People like to call Vancouverites wimps when it comes to the snow, but in reality, we just aren't prepared for it....and why would we?
Anyway, all my friends at UBC are irate with the fact that almost every school in the GVRD closed but UBC. Suckers!

we all understand why the closures happen, vancouver isn't going to spend tonnes of money on equipment for five days a year.
But i thought calgarians could use the laugh, as -1 in a wet cold cannot compare with -31 no matter how dry it is.

Count me as kinda glad I didn't have to try driving up to SFU this morning, but on the other hand, I haven't seen people cross-country skiing on the street since I lived in the Kootenays.

Sounds like Vancouver gets more snow than Calgary. 15cm? I can't remember the last time I saw a snow fall that big. Maybe once last year. But not very often.

Sunshine Village had 13 cm Saturday, and 15 cm Sunday. Sunday was the best skiing I ever saw there.

I don't think its 15 in the city, more like 6 or 7 to be honest. The 15 means places in the valley like Surrey, Coquitlam and places like that. I'm in North Van and I would say about 10-12 or so, still a substantial amount for our area.

How about Calgary?
Look back at the snowfalls earlier this winter. 2cm or 3cm of snow and the city roads become gridlock. People seem to forget how to drive. Everyother intersection seems to have an accident and police got a couple of hundred accident calls over a single night.
Vancouver rarely gets snow. Calgary is known for unpredictable weather and its resident know that snow and cold weather are possible on short notice anytime outside of the summer months. Yet the somehow are always unprepared for it.
