Calgary Sun "Stranded" Article
Basically the sun sent out a male and female reporter to be stranded by the side of the road to see if anyone would stop to help. The female had 5 people stop and the male had none. (Of course it helped that the female reporter was attractive )
The thing that got me most was that at the end of the day, the female reporter is driving home and see's someone stranded by the side of the road...do you think she stopped?? Nope...she figured that "It's easier for men to stop-they're often bigger, stronger and it's less of a risk". I could see that if it was a male stranded that she's be worried, but it was a female.
On the plus side, she did call the cops to help the stranded motorist

Frankly, I wouldn't stop if I was a girl. I certainly will think twice now. But in this weather, someone has a flat or something... yeah, stop and offer a warm set of gloves or a hand etc.

Not to be a wet blanket, but that does very little. The cops are inundated with calls when the weather is like this. Tow trucks take forever because they've got such a backlog of calls.
If you see someone stranded in this type of weather, how can you not help? Even if you let them sit in your car until real help arrives... It's f'n cold out...!

I know the cops won't do anything, but at least she did something.
The thing that gets me most is that after what she went through all day waiting by the side of the road, that she was still too scared to help out someone in a similar situation

Wasn't it just earlier this month that the police advised people not to stop and call them instead?
It was just after that good samaritan stopped outside of Bassano and was jumped by the people in "distress".

This one time, I pulled over and gave a motorist all of my internal organs to use as axle-grease. They weren't even stuck or anything, just taking a leak.

Being a female, if I was by myself, I would not stop - I'm just not willing to take the risk.
However, If I'm with someone else I'll stop when possible.

To me it really depends on where they are "stranded". In the article it says she moved to a location closer to a Burger King because that is where she wanted to go for lunch. If I'm driving by and I see someone stuck but they are close to food, shelter and a working phone then there is no way I'm stopping. Unless they need help pushing their car off the road that is.

The thing that kinda pissed me off about this exercise in obviousness was the reaction of the people who stopped when told the truth. Apparently many were angry and offended.
If you stop to help someone and find out that help isn't required, you should be happy. Other reactions suggest ulterior motives behind a simple intention to help another human being out.

The thing is though- I don't mind a disruption to my schedule to help somebody who truely needs it. But if I pull over just because somebody was counting cars- I would be ticked off too.
It would be one thing to pull over, have them tell you to look behind you- there's the AMA truck they called. Then I'd be grateful that I didn't need to help. But to have somebody decieve me- I don't like that.
And the Sun just succeeded in making 5 more "won't pull over to help" people.

I believe the expression is "A man would hump a snake if you pull its teeth." To which the man replies: "You don't need to pull its teeth, just hold its head."

I slid off the highway once and about three cars stopped to make sure I was OK. I was fine, and it was a great feeling when that many people stopped to help a total stranger, right away.

4 weeks ago my sister was in town for the funeral of our uncle. She was on the off ramp from Deerfoot to Glenmore Trail when her rear passenger tire on her drivers side went flat. She basicly took out the spare and was prepairing to change the tire when an older man in a truck pulled over to help her out.

As long as there are people like Frank the Tank (where the heck is he?), society will be OK.

No kidding, thats great! It could've turned into this one story I heard, could even be urban myth around here, where a small, white car slid off the hiway near here during a blizzard...and wasn't found til spring with the driver still inside! Can someone verify this story.

I've stopped a couple times for people, but that was back when cell phones were a rarity, not a commonplace. I mean, really, what are the chances someone might get stuck in the city and NOT have a cell phone to call a tow-truck, or a relative, or JAMMIES AT 3 IN THE FREAKING MORNING CAUSE YOU ARE TOO ****ING CHEAP TO GET AN AMA CARD whoops that just kind of slipped out there, sorry...
Anyway, back to my original point - if you want help, don't just stand there, 'cause standing there means I assume you are all good and are just waiting for the truck to come. Try sobbing into your hands, or clenching your fists and screaming at the sky. That'll get my attention.
