I hate going to the movie theatre
So, last night a couple of buddies and I decide to go and see "There Will be Blood" at the local Onex owned theatre.
Anyway, again, as with the last time I saw a serious "art" type of movie at the theatre, I realized why people download movies, or wait for DVD and watch them at home.
First of all, there were these two a-hole kids who had booze with them, who decided to drink, talk at a regular volume, comment on everything and act like dicks, for the sake of acting like dicks.
Second, there was a group of guys who were just unsophisiticated. Laughing at inappropriate things, as if it was a comedy because they didn' get it. Texting on their cellphones etc.....
I had a similar experience seeing Pan' Labyrinth last year. After the movie, my friends talked about how once we get a home theatre, the entire going to a movie experience will be lost.
I know the MPAA spent a lot of time last Oscars stroking each other about you can't replicate a movie experience by having a 40" Plasma and a Dolby home theatre. They were right, unless I invite some ######bags over it won't be the same.
That being said, I don't care if I see transformers, or some popcorn flick in the theatre, but for anything remotely serious, I"m pretty much done.
Oh and this doesn't even begin to address lining up hours before hand.

Yeah, this was my problem when I went to see No Country for Old Men. These two bimbos behind me kept making brilliant comments like "Oh...so he's the main character!" I think people should have to pass a basic IQ test before being let into anything above a PG rating.

That's funny: I went to see There Will Be Blood with a couple of buddies last night too. The buddy who sat in the middle was making so many dick-headed comments that me and my other friend started texting each other about what a dick-head he is. It was Highlarious!
Well, that last part isn't true, but I know where you're coming from on movie theatres. I'm really only inclined to go to one where I expect the special effects to matter - otherwise, I'll take the comfort of home any day.
As for the movie: good film, very clockwork-esque. But it was also often very funny, so I can see why there would have been some laughter. Plainview's conversion scene was particularly funny - one of the best scenes I've seen in awhile.

If a movie isn't playing at Eau Claire, The Globe or The Uptown then I won't go. Most of the dummies go to the malls.

Sounds like I had the exact conversation with some guys from work today.
The MPAA claims it loses so much cash from people downloading movies. I disagree. The combination of the described movie experience (overpriced, sticky floors, having to show up 30 minutes early to get a seat, and loud people), the ability to have a really good home theatre, and the fact that Hollywood is producing many remakes and sequels are the reasons people are downloading movies. Yes, they're probably losing a little bit of money, but I would imagine that most of the downloaded movies are movies that people wouldn't pay for anyways.

I enjoy going to the theater. If this happens and you aren't comforatable confronting these people then let the manager know, they will be kicked out.

I've gotten lots of people kicked out of the theatre, I paid my money its my right to actually hear and enjoy the theatre.
I usually give them one warning, something a long the lines of "shut the f#ck up", usually I get a cheer from the rest of the patron and it shames the idiots into quieting down.
If not I go to the door and call over one of the employee's bring them into the theatre and point the idiots out. Everytime they've been walked.
They can wait for me outside if they want to. I haven't had a good violent explosion in a long time, and it doesn't scare me.

I wont go and see a serious film in theaters for much of this exact same reason.
The last movie I saw in theaters was:
Spiderman 3: The Worst Movie of Our Generation.
I purchased a coke 2.5 times larger than my bladder and filled it with a mickey of Rye just to keep my blood pressure at a reasonable level.
I seriously contemplated demanding my money back from that film, and no lowly theater manager gets paid enough to stand in the way of my alcohol induced rage.
I was never going to go. I could tell it sucked out loud. But my friend had seen it and said it was great, and me being a huge Venom fan since I was a kid took the bait and we went and saw it.
I was literally seething with rage for the entire duration of that movie.
He set me up. And he did it for own amusement. I was understandably outraged.

I wonder if there were similar complaints from the patron of the old porn theatres the 70's
I would of enjoyed the movie but that guy in the row in front of me was making way to much noise and holding a conversation with god.
I couldn't enjoy my "art" film.
The fact that he kept talking to god only pissed me off more.

There wasn't a line up last night, I'm just talking in general.
Call me a wuss, but in an urban centre, you don't know who's who and who's willing to do what, I'm not confronting those idiots only to have one of them pull a knife on me over a movie.
And I shouldn't have to miss some of the movie to find the manager, it's all and all a bad situation.
Also, that doesn't help me with the guys in front who were just inconsiderate and not being deliberately belligerent.
The movie itself is okay. Day-Lewis as usual is fantastic, the cinematography is spectacular, the movie has a lot of seperate parts that are great but as a whole i was left unsatisfied. Read Roger Ebert's review, I think he hits the nail on the head when he says.

"There Will Be Blood" is the kind of film that is easily called great. I am not sure of its greatness. It was filmed in the same area of Texas used by "No Country for Old Men," and that is a great film, and a perfect one. But "There Will Be Blood" is not perfect, and in its imperfections (its unbending characters, its lack of women or any reflection of ordinary society, its ending, its relentlessness) we may see its reach exceeding its grasp. Which is not a dishonorable thing.

A little OT, but yeah, Spiderman 3 was terrible.
I don't like movie theaters because I find my friends always want to go when the place is packed. I'm 6 feet 200 pounds... I don't really like touching arms with some stranger next to me for 2 hours. Having to sit directly next to someone I don't know just isn't appealing to me (though I bite the bullet when I have to, obviously).
Make the chairs bigger... I'm not even (that) fat!

The problem I'm finding though is, its not just a couple people. Its a huge chunk of the theatre thats ######ed. I saw Cloverfield last weekend, and seriously every time there was a quiet part, different people were making farting sounds with their hands n mouth, or yelling out what they thought was funny stuff. The worst part was, the theatre loved it! I swear nearly half the audience was breaking up in laughter, which of course made the people want to do it more.
I'm on a terrible streak right now for seeing movies in terms of ending up with a bad audience, I'd say its two years running. I feel confident in saying that 3/4 of movies I see in the theatres these days also come with an annoying audience. Seriously what the hell is wrong with people these days?? I dont ever remember having to deal with this type of stuff when seeing movies in the past, at least not on a regular basis like this.

I can't stand the commercials they now show nonstop for 40 minutes before each film. Not previews... commercials. I can't even talk to the girl I took to the movies because the sound is cranked.
I just don't go anymore. The aggravation listed above + how it is like watching TV without a DVR makes it not worth my time.

I couldn't stop laughing at how awful and cheesy spiderman jumping in front of the American flag in the middle of the movie.
I *never* talk in movie theatres, but I let out a huge "Are you kidding me" blast during that scene.

I forgot about the commercials! I've noticed now they have the "quiet" commercials when you walk in, and then the lights dim- but no previews. 8 commercials. I usually start booing.

I honest to God, lost it near the end, when the Butler tells the Green Goblin: "I saw it all, he didnt kill your father."
Really? You should have said something 2 movies ago you geriatric dumbass.
He should have torn that guys head off right there.
Enormous cop-out after enormous cop-out.
But this is about the theatergoing experience.
Its terrible. And its terribly expensive.
EDIT: I've resurrected the Spiderman 3 thread for my comments

I gave up going to theatres for lent a couple decades ago and haven't missed them a bit. The advantages to watching movies at home are numerous, starting with a pause button for trips to the fridge for beer and snacks, a private bathroom, no loud mouth idiots ... and you don't get kicked out for having sex on the floor during the movie.
