Bottom line = Fence was too short. Didn't meet min. standards.
Even if these guys were morons, drinking at the zoo after hours, you don't think any animal could get out..
They will get some good money out of this. Although they are short one guy.

Bottom line = animal's don't attack for no reason. And i seriously doubt this tiger was hungry enough to do this. It clearly wasn't after food.
Short fence or not (which I do agree needs to be fixed), these guys got what they deserved. Too bad the tiger didn't.

The zoo was negligent. I don't feel sorry for the guys that got mauled. But if the fence was the proper height. Nobody would have gotten hurt and the Tiger would still be alive. Thank god no innocent people were in the vicinity. I just shudder thinking what if some poor family with kids would have been near bye.

The negligence of the zoo mixed with the overwhelming stupidity of these guys resulted in the death of a phenomenal and rare animal. Absolutely frustrating.

Once again, animals don't attack without a reason. The tiger knew what it was doing and knew the people it was going after....it clearly wasn't doing it for food. Something tells me if there was a family nearby, it would have ran past them.

If it were, we wouldn't be able to build enough prisons to hold that many people....

What standards? There is no law about heights of zoo fences. There was a recommendation that it be higher and that's it. I feel sorry for the tiger and not for the losers!!!

Sure they do. I guess you never saw When Animals Attack.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293702/
The late Robert Urich maintained a cool, even demeanour as its host, beginning the show with the warning, "The following program contains graphic footage of animals attacking humans." With a brief, conversational comment and a minimum of sensationalism he introduces each film clip, some of them home movies and some being professionally-shot (but unplanned) footage, of a variety of animal attacks on people in various situations; often he will punctuate the events as they unfold with a calm narrative. Over the course of the three shows, the animals involved include everything from ordinary household pets to fighting bulls to elephants, lions, and bears. This is classic television that should not be overlooked by students of shock film.

having some dude invade your territory and stick a camera in your face is not a reason?
most animals are pretty simple, they attack when they feel threatened or are hungry. they don't attack for sport.

I agree. If I was a lawyer for the zoo in this case I would argue that there was no breach of duty resulting in negligence. The chances of such an attack occurring are so slim, so freakish, that it isn't reasonable to expect greater care to be taken then the moat and fence in place. Then again in American tort law the gravity of the potential result (i.e. terrible death) and the burden of mitigation (i.e. the cost of building a higher fence) possibly outweigh the unlikelihood of such an incident occurring.

The American Zoo Board people have a book on recommended fence heights. In the US, I'm sure some jury and judge will reward a nice penny simply on that fact. Is it a law? No, but a recommendation by a National Zoo Board.
