I use we no matter what the Flames do, win or lose. I feel apart of the team, because without the fans there is no team

when we fans put in 25+ years of dedicated cheering and living and breathing the team, we can refer to the team of our affection in any way we like. Chances are come 15 years from now, the only ones that are going to still be with the organization are the fans anyways.

It's as much the 5 year old in front of the TV cheering on his hero as it is the player scoring the goal

I was talking to my friend from Vancouver last night while we were at a bar which has TSN on the TV... at least the ones that we can see...

Anyway... When I saw Cujo being signed, he said: Hey, Calgary signed Cujo, and I immediately went: ya, we signed Cujo, but I don't know if is a good move just yet, since we didn't exactly give McElhinney much of a chance.

I will use "we", but thats just me.

Co-workers always say crap like "your Flames lost again last night, eh?". So if I have to be associated with a loss I'm going to take credit with a win.

I am sure there is a "your wife has been a user of my Wee for some time" kind of joke in there somewhere, but that would be like poaching, and I would feel bad.

As for the real topic at hand... I don't care about the "we" usage if it is a die hard fan, but if it is a bandwagoner fan that jumps ship after every loss, I call them out as soon as I hear "we" out of them.

I always do this. I realize it's bad form but instead of saying the Oilers play tonight I always say we have a big game tonight. Much easier to say!

Nope...no we, unless you are either on the ice or directly involved in the putting together of the hockey team (ie, Ken King yes, random nacho cheese pourer no.)

Fans get caught up in what their teams are up to. Its why this place has over 1 million posts.

We are not a part of the team, but we feel the same successes and failures as the team proceeds along. Hell, I'll also bet that we over-analyze the game more than the actual players and coaches do.

I dunno, as long as "we" are paying their salarys i think we can call the team ours.

Exactly what I was gonna say.

I've been supporting this team, emotionally, and financially for over 26 years now. How many players have had that stretch of loyalty? Maybe they should be the ones who feel bad to use the word "we".

Do the Flames have a team without players? Nope, so from what I'm reading here the players have a right to say 'we'.

Do the Flames have a team without the fans? Nope, so I'll still be saying 'we'.

Always say we.
I find it in bad form when fans don't. We are an extremely important part of the team and absolutely should say WE!

I try not to do it, although I can't say I'm very successful making sure not to use it. And I don't really care if others use it, except for that office guy who wears his Giants leather jacket every monday after they win and gloats on and on about how "we" (the Giants) were the better team, WE kicked ass, WE are going to the Super Bowl. Yadda yadda. Kinda fun to rub it in those guy's faces.

Anyways, the reason I even became aware of this "we" thing when referring to your pro sports team allegiances was because of the Bob Kemp show back on Sporting News Radio. We used to get it in Calgary when The Team (was is 1060?) came into town, before it became The Fan. Anyways, we picked up all the US Sporting News shows at night and the one of the nest ones was Bob Kemp's. It was more caller-oriented than a lot of the ESPN ones, but you had to know your stuff and or Bob would rip you a new one. And he HATED when people used the "we" possessive. He'd ask them things like "oh, you play for the team? or "what do you do for the Cowboys?" or whatever. He was kind of an arrogant a-hole, but I liked his show after a while.

I have been emotionally invested in the Calgary Flames longer than any of the players, GM, coach, or president have been.

That makes it "MY" team.

Whatever, you poseur...

Honestly, the only thing I think is "bad form" is telling fans how they should talk about their teams. For my money, there's nothing wrong with saying "WE." They're a professional sports team, not the Crips.

the flames are my team just like the Riders are my team.

no i am not impying ownership or that i have a roster spot but they are the team that i identify with therefore they are my team.

i believe using "we" is especially appropriate when talking about international sports. we won the world cup in 2006. (forza italia)

McG has no problem with "we".

McG also has no problem with people that do their speaking in the 3rd person.

You know what, I've invested a lot of time, energy, and emotion into the Calgary Flames. Frankly they're a part of me, and if they are a part of me, then I'm in some what a part of them.

Can you imagine a team without any fans? If no one shows up or cheers, the team ceases to be. That makes us, the fans, part of the team, a very vital part of the team. Ergo if we're part of the team, then we (fans) can use the term "we" to refer to the team.
