Default Wireless router help

So here's the situation.

On our main floor, we have our Shaw router that is plugged into a wireless router. My room is in the basement and i want to hook up my desktop to the internet so I bought another wireless router.

First question: will this wireless router downstairs connect to the wireless router on our main floor, which is plugged into our Shaw? And if not, how would i go about so?

Secod question: I was trying to hook up the new router in the basement and it asked me for my IP address. Probably a really dumb question, but where do i find this?

If you only have 1 computer in the basement, i would use a wireless bridge instead. The RJ45 coming out of the bridge can also be connected to a switch to connect more computers.

to find out the ip address, click on start -> Run. Type in CMD and hit OK. In there, type in IPCONFIG. You will be able to see your ipaddress.

The usual setup you would just have one router in the house. If you want to connect a computer to your wireless connection, you would buy a wireless card, not another router.

There is a way to get your setup to work, but I wouldn't suggest trying it as it is likely to cause problems for you down the road.

If my desktop is roughly 3 or 4 years old will it have a slot for a wireless card?

Yes Your computer's motherboard probably has 4-6 PCI slots. If you crack open your case, they are the white slots that you put things like modems, sound cards, network cards, sometimes video cards.

Here's a pic : http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/...d-callouts.jpg

You can buy the wireless card and install it yourself. Don't worry, it is really easy to do. The package will come with a CD with drivers you need to get going. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

EDIT

I just did a quick look on Futureshop, and something like this should be fine : http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...45&catid=19997

I don't see the need to spend more than $30 on the card...There are different "standards" to be aware of. The most common are:
  • b - an older standard, you can't buy 'b' equipment anymore.
  • g - faster than 'b'. Probably the most common nowadays.
  • n - the latest. Faster than 'g', more expensive.
What you need to know is that even 'b', the slowest, will meet most home users needs. Your Internet browsing speed is determined by your Internet connection. The wireless speed is only a very small factor. Think of it this way. You are planning a trip across the country, and can go a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Even if you back out of your drive way at the speed of light, it isn't going to make a big difference in the overall speed of the trip.
