The funny thing is, we'd played about three times before my wife said "why are the pieces that represent boatloads full of plantation workers brown?!?"
Then we all sat for a while in silence and shame....

I used to play at jSettlers, but I never thought I was good enough to get into the ladder.

The Cities & Knights of Catan Expansion is pretty fun, people should try it if they are looking for a little bit more strategy in their settlers game. The Seafarers of Catan expansion is fun too, though it doesn't change the strategy as much as Cities & Knights does.

I'm not a fan of the Carcassonnes expansions. They're a little bit TOO random for my liking.
Settlers fully expanded is pretty great though. When the majority of us Asians play, it's a hoot because we're always shouting and fighting our ways into good trades! You'd think you were at a Chinese flea market with the way we play
Does anybody know where I can buy Puerto Rico in town? I've been searching on and off for a while now, and can't seem to find it. Settlers is ridiculously easy to find. PR, not so much.

I love Catan. We have a large group of friends that we get together with and play for about 4 + years now. I do enjoy Seafarers and Cities and Knights better than the basic game but I enjoy the time to get together with friends. I have been playing on asobrain for a while.

Okay, so count me confused....
If i were to buy this type of game as a gift for a friend, so that we could play together (2) or in a group of 3 or 4, which is the best first option?
We are not idiots, so i don't want the simplist i guess, but have not played this sort of game and are looking to learn?
Settlers of Catan? Is that the main ones name?

I have a anniversary Settlers edition - 3d - its sweet - although only 4 players.
Memoir 44 is good - very quick 2 player game - endless game options.
If you are bit nerdier:
Power Grid, and Die Macher. Valley games just shipped container last week, just got it yesterday.

Where to buy these games:
http://www.sentrybox.com/
1835 - 10th Ave SW
With over 13,000 sq. ft. of display and gaming space, the Sentry Box is a Mecca for those interested in fantasy, science fiction, or military games, books and miniatures. The policy of the Sentry Box has always been "If it's in print, we'll try to stock it." With over 46,000 different items on the shelves, this shows that we mean what we say.

ONLY 4 players? Like MAX 4 players? Or you have to have exactly 4?
Despite how i must appear at CP I am not really that nerdy so.... ? lol... I guess i have my moments though!? hahaha... but i never played like those Mystic Quest/Pokeman/whatever card games (or whatever they were called?) that were all the rage a few years back or anything.

The basic Settlers game is for up to 4 players, but can be played with 2 or 3. You can also buy a 5-6 player expansion, which I recommend.

Does the 5-6 player expansion make the basic game more fun for 2-4 players as well?

The normal settlers game is 4 players max with expansion for 5&6
The 3d edition is only 4 players, no expansions - thats what I meant.

Well, it's better for 4 players for sure. If you'll never have 5, you can get away with just the basic game, though. For me, I've found the expansion to be well worth it.

It's a marketing scam that many of these games aren't equipped for 6 players right out of the box. Having to buy expansions to go from 4 to 6 players is nothing but a money grab.

###. What's worse is they do it again with Cities & Knights and Seafarers--meaning you essentially need to buy 4 games.

Thanks! If I have time this weekend, I'll be checking a couple of those places out. I was always checking around the game stores in the mall. Was never sure where all the specialty stores were at.

The Sentry Box is all you really need to check out... it has pretty much everything... my opinion though, I haven't been to many (any) other places.

In Calgary you're pretty much wasting your time unless you go to the Sentry Box. There is no better selection for board games in this city. Not even close.
