People suck
So I suspected it for a while, but this confirms it.
I take the family to a big box electronics store to buy, amongst other things, a storage bag for our 1 year old digital video camera. Long story short, we leave the store and forget to take the camera (which is somewhat small), leaving it in the shopping cart under the child's seat when I drop off the cart. Get to the truck in the lot, which is a 1 minute trip tops, and my wife says "where's the camera?". I run back to the store, and the camera is already gone; some asshat probably did a grab 'n go. It's got our number on the bottom, but I doubt I'll see it again. Not that said asshat will be able to do much with the camera, without the special cables and docking station...
I think people truly suck in today's society.

Yeah but for every asshat there's a nicehat who actually does good things, like the old man who used to hand out homemade candy at the schoolyard and offer to give kids a ride home.

Nothing new about this. People have sucked through out history.
Sorry to hear about your camera. Although it does give you a chance to buy a really nice new one.

My girlfriend made me a shirt for Christmas that reads simply "I hate people". It's fantastic.

I'm sure the topic is Fata... but I'm not going to post the bazillion links...
Sorry for your loss Ironhorse. Did you ask the management if they saw anything, or if they caught the guy/girl on tape?

They probably have security cameras, though it may not help.

When I'm in a situation like that I allways blame myself. It isn't a secret that if you leave something somewhere someone will take it. Even when my truck got broke into, I felt so stupid for leaving my CD's in there and was thankfull that I was smart enough not to leave my digital camera in it as well.
But you never know Iron Horse. Maybe the person that found it hasn't gotten around to trying to contact you yet. Did you check with the store to see if somebody had turned it in? If I found a camera in a shopping cart, that is what I would do.

hahaha nice.
But beyond that white van side of the story,
You are right. For asshat there typically is a good guy. Problem is, it takes ten good deads to be as noticeable as a bad one.
If you are confused about what I mean, let me put it this way.
If you leave the toliet seat up, you have to do this dishes, the laundry, make dinner, watch a chick flick, and give her a neck rub just to make sure that your girlfriend isn't pissed at you for falling into the toilet (which is her fault for not looking)

It's kind of weird to think about. We all work with tons of people, run into a lot of people when we're out and about, know lots of people, and really, of the people you know, how many do you think can actually rip other people off like that?
Of all the people I work with and know, I really wouldn't think that there are too many that would do something like that. But statistics would seem to argue that since there is always someone willing to snap up what you left behind.
How it's OK to do something like that is beyond me.
But there are people out there willing to return things. Had a friend lose a cell phone and the next day they received a call about wanting to return it. So there are nice people out there!

Just saw on the news the other day the whole 'pay it backwards' at drive-thru's. This is one of the coolest things I've heard of recently, and it's getting more popular...
There still are good people in this world. Unfortunately they're clouded by the negative actions of a few.

Can you explain what 'pay it backwards' is?

I go to Timmies, and when paying for mine give them extra cash to pay for the next person's coffee.

You know that some ass will probably whine because the pay it back isn't enough to cover his or her triple lattie zapacciono with gold flecks.

I've been on the paying side of a "pay it backwards" a few times, never had it happen to me that it was paid for, but it's one of those things that isn't expected, and it kinda feels good to know you're paying for the guy behind you in a selfless act.

Just to clarify- I haven't had a chance to do this yet as I don't drink much coffee. My example was just to try and simplify it.
I have heard of it happening alot; including once during December somebody called into the radio station to thank the person who had paid $100 backwards so her order was completely free.

I've had a stranger cover for me in the Timmy's drive-thru as well. I remember being so confused as to what happened. It's pretty nice. The phrase they used on the news was "random acts of kindness".
