Only in Theaters? WTF?
Seriously, why do so many movies say "Only in Theaters" during the bloody commercial?
Do production companies honestly think that the public masses will think "OMG, this movie won't be released on DVD, we'd better rush out right now and watch it!"
This has been driving me nuts for years now.
If anyone can explain this, please enlighten me.
End of small rant.

Ive always taken it as
"This movie can only been seen in the theaters for now. No PPV, no rentals... for now"
but who doesn't know that... I have no idea.

I think they mean, it won't be shown at the drive in.

Because the drive-in is a huge threat to Movie Theatres....
Who even has drive-ins anymore? Out of them, which drive-ins get new movies?
I think you're right.

In Australia it's the same thing except they say "Only at the Movies". My buddy and I have had the same discussion. Maybe it is to discourage pirating or to prevent people who have pirated copies from using the excuse that they didn't know their copy was illegal? I dunno.

Maybe it's a leftover phrase from when movies really were "Only in theatres"? As in before video.

Believe it or not, not everyone knows which movies are currently running in theatres and which have been released to DVD. If they were to run an ad that didn't say either "Only In Theatres" or "Own it now on DVD" then I personally wouldn't have a clue as to whether I should be driving to the movie theatre or to Blockbuster.

Or how about :
People= have lives.
Myself; I have enough other stuff on the go than to keep track of what movies are available where. And if somebody is going so fork out thousands of dollars to try and get me to watch their movie; it's a good idea for them to tell me where to watch it.

Advertisers feel they have to say "only in threatres" because some people are stupid. Such as the woman who bought a motorhome, drove it down the highway, felt the need to make a sandwich so did so without also feeling the need to pull over first. She put it on cruise control and went to the back. When the vehicle crashed she later sued...I believe it was Winnibago. Now Winnibago put something in the manual to the effect that, "do not operate vehicle with a driver" or something similar.
Now someone has actually named a stupid award after the lady and hands it out regularly to stupid people.
Having said this, I will point out that this is how the threatres think. I do understand the previous comments.

They should change the phrase to "in theaters now", or is this too much to ask?
Also, they usually add "only in theaters" for crappy movies... Which should of gone straight to DVD.
"Only in theaters" is a straight up lie.

Frankly, I think it is stupider to be confused by what "only in theatres" means. Seems pretty obvious.

I am 100% out of touch with what is in theaters. I never go to movies, but I do occasionally rent them. I usually hit the mute button when commercials come on, but still sit and watch the commercial. If it looks interesting, I unmute. Why am I stupid for not knowing whether this (apparently) interesting movie is in theaters or at blockbuster? Do you know what lunar phase we're in? Based on your comment, I'd argue that I have every right to assume that people that don't know what lunar phase we're in are stupid. Afterall, because I like knowing, everybody should.

I dunno, the phrase seems pretty self explanatory to me. "Only in theatres", meaning you can't watch it anywhere else (legally) unless you go to the theatre to watch it, as in it is not yet on DVD for rent or to own. I really don't get where the confusion is.

I agree. The lady Winnibago driver won a Stella Award. It was started for that woman who won a suit against Mcdonalds for spilling hot coffee and then blamed and sued Mcdonalds.
