I'll assume you mean "much less noise," but can you explain this "stealth" mode??# I certainly can't find anything about this on the web.
Wow, a "Blue Thunder" flashback moment, didn't that super chopper have such a mode?

Here is an excellent piece on the acoustics of helicopters, which briefly talks about the NOTAR system used on the MD500 HAWC1.

Or was that Airwolf?

Virtual noise means that, even if a helicopter is very quiet, some people are disturbed by just knowing that one is in the neighborhood, and concern over safety is often raised as an issue. The ultimate case would be a completely silent helicopter whose pilot could be accused of hovering outside your bedroom window.

EDIT - Oops typo on my part, we have the 520 - the 500's are the standard tail rotor version ('Littlebirds' in Blackhawk Down)

I have been woken up a grand total of zero times by AIR1 (the EPS helicopter). I too, like someone else mentioned, feel safe and secure when it is flying overhead. At least that way I know that the police are up there watching, and doing an excellent job to catch whoever they are after.

I don't personally believe that my city council has the best interests of the police or the city. A committee recently voted to reduce the EPS budget by 3.9 million dollars next year, thus taking away 39 brand new cops that would have been patrollng the streets. The EPS came up with stats after looking at possible retirement, and they felt that they needed 100 officers hired in order to maintain staffing levels, and now city council does something stupid like that.

Now we have the chase "problem", and the police commission (which I have concluded is NOT popular at all with the department members after talking with numerous police officers here) wants to review that issue. Heaven forbid we should ever blame the criminals who do the running from the police. After all, they only broke the law and decided to speed up when the lights lit up...not like that is against the law or anything.

I am tired of police departments being called the bad guys by the media and watchgroups.

Helicopter: good

Quotas: Stupid, especially since they arent needed. There are more than enough idiots on the roads that traffic cops could meet their quota in a single day. Quota's dont work, try something else.

Edmonton: What do you expect? Most of those mulletheads probably grew up watching Dukes of Hazard and think police chases through hick towns are cool.

But breaking up backyard parties is just ridiculous.

You must not of been at the infamous "Fyfe Road" party of the early 80's.

I could see where a helicopter could of prevented a WHOLE bunch of damage...not the least was the complete annihalation of a police cruiser and cops running from flying beer bottles.

It was completely out of control.

On a slightly-related note... GAWD is that STARS helicopter ever loud when it's coming in for a landing! Flies directly over my apartment before landing at Foothills Hospital a few hundred metres away.

Compared to that beast, HAWCS isn't even noticeable.
