That being said, when pressed for it, i'm sure most people would just go along with it. I mean, you have to get your fingerprints scanned to get into Disneyland now and I don't think it's effected their bottom line. If there isn't some huge outcry from that, then I would say most people wouldn't care about the recording of DL numbers.

What I really hate about the Disney system is that even if you lose your card, despite the fact they have your fingerprint, you're still screwed and your fingerprint does nothing to gain you access. They could have at least offered some benefits with the system.

I write CHECK ID on the back of all my credit cards. I would never let them record my DL information though.

I have no problem with them asking me for ID. In the end it makes it safer for me if my card is stolen.

That's the same thing I have on all my cards. I write "See Photo ID" on the back instead of my signature.

I would never let them record my DL number either. It's irrelevant. All they need to see is my photo and my name that matches the card.

One of my credit cards that I use only for emergencies has CHECK ID, in big black sharpie on the signature bar. Only once in probably a dozen uses has anyone asked for ID or questioned the lack of signature, and that was at Toys R Us because apparently they have a policy against taking credit cards signed that way.

I recently saw a person in a store not be allowed to use their credit card after doing this; because it is a term of use that the card must be signed.

Technically the store is correct. If you faught the charges and told them them your card had indeed never been signed (and it hadn't) they store could be on the hook.

From what I understand, if a retailer doesn't ask for ID and someone is using a stolen card the credit card company won't reimburse the retailer. My g/f works in retail, and they've been screwed over numerous times for not asking for a D/L when some punk uses a stolen card. Not sure I'd be comfortable with someone recording my D/L# though.

My mom works for co-op and she said they can ask for photo i.d. (they always do for cheques) but it is against the privacy act to record your drivers licence number. They used to do it but have stopped.

For me asking for ID is a must as it says it on the back of the card, I even point out that's what it says on the back of the card when they don't ask for ID. I have never heard of recording your DL number, that's a first for me and I would never allow that too happen. I found in the US they never check ID, heck they ask you too swipe your own credit card. Anyways the credit card company isn't responsible for a merchant processing the card, if a company does it they are now out of that money. Ken0042 that's why you sign your card and write ASK FOR ID next too it.

Yeah, I'm another ask for ID person with the CC, but if they started recording the Drivers License number would wonder what is up.

Whenever I am asked for ID with my credit card (or at a post office to pick up a parcel), I show them my drivers licence, but do not hand it to them. I occasionally get a strange look, but never any resistance. I would have a serious problem if they wrote down my driver's licence number. I am glad that it is against the privacy act, and will object if anyone ever tries to do this.

I'm pretty sure the CC company is stuck with the loss but they wouldn't be too happy with the retailer about it. I worked at a place where AMEX no longer allowed us to use their card because our business had too many frauds involving their cards. AMEX isn't so bad but could you imagine if MC or VISA no longer let your company use their cards? A business could lose a lot of customers that way.

while it annoys the crap out of me, when i am asked for photo id i usually provide it.

your drivers license number should never be recorded. your sin should not be recorded for a cc purchase either fwiw.

and while i see spaces for phone numbers on forms all of the time...you should also never bother to fill that out.

why?

because there are two types of cc transactions. the first set are the ones that are authorized electronically; the transaction is presented to the cc company and an amount is "held" on your credit card pending presentation of the transaction in written form. electronically, this is now taken as an accepted transaction. you must sign the form acknowledging that you will pay the card issuer...and there is the validation of the transaction. one of the things being used now is a 3 digit number after your cc number for online transactions...to prove that you actually have the card in front of you. anyways...these are the dream transactions for retailers because the transaction is vetted against a computer and it provides real time confirmation of card stolen or not. what it doesn't provide is protection of someone using your credit card number and the card hasn't been marked as lost or stolen. that is where the signature comes in. your signature in real life should match the signature on the back of the card. the retailer must check that.

offline transactions are similar. signature must be checked, transaction processed, etc. as the transaction was offline, the retailer usually has a floor limit of transactions that it is responsible for...say $50 or $100. This is agreed with the retailer and the financial institution when the original banking package for the credit card is drawn up. the credit card company covers charges over that floor limit for offline transactions.

checking pictures is fine. writing down ancillary information for credit card transactions? i wouldn't buy from that store if they did that because there is no justifiable need for that. none.

just my 2 cents!

The store I work at (part of a national chain) asks for ID over $200, company policy. We don't write down DL numbers though, our cashiers just make sure the person looks like the picture and the name matches.

That said, we do hear quite frequently about fake CCs, especially with people buying big-ticket items (computers).

My GM got ID'd for a $20 purchase at the outlet malls in Mount Vernon, WA last week though, and they took down his DL apparently too.

Why is everyone so paranoid about people writing down your drivers license?

I understand that identity theft sucks but if someone wants your info it is easy enough to get through other means.

Maybe I am just naive but if they want to write down my DL number they can knock themselves out and I certainly have no problem writing down my phone number on any forms.

to check your id, they should not need your DL number period. Just the picture and name.
