Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

Nothing. But he knows a dubious ideology when he see one.

Har har ... good one.

Actually, you're right. That does give him some authority on the topic.

I think we should take the pope very seriously, afterall, he has a Phd in Environmental sciences and is far removed from the influences of power and excess. Now we just need to hear George Clooney's rebuttle and the world will be fixed, lets hear it for dangerously underqualified opinions!

wow, I don't understand how people can have such hate for somebody they have never even met. The fact is that the pope is a very influential person. I wouldn't be surprised if half of you would classify the POPE in the same category as murderers, drunk drivers and rapists.

remember the crowds that gathered when john paul II died? yeah, the pope is definitely a worthless figure. not influential at all.

Didn't look past your post to see if this was answered already so....

Do you need to be a scientist to have an opinion on this subject? And from what I read he wasn't voicing his opinion on the science but on the hysterical howls of doom.

Given the Catholic Church's position on condom use, the Pope can be seen as actively helping the spread of HIV. How many thousands (millions?) of Africans will have contracted the virus because that's one continent where the Church still holds a great deal of influence. So yeah, I don't see the Pope as being much better than a murderer, drunk driver, or rapist.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3176982.stm

Quote:
The Catholic Church has been accused of telling people in countries with high rates of HIV that condoms do not protect against the deadly virus.

[...]

The WHO also attacked the Catholic Church's comments.

"Statements like this are quite dangerous, " a spokeswoman told BBC News Online.

"We are facing a global pandemic which has already killed more than 20 million people and currently affects around 42 million.
