MLB - The Mitchell Report
I figured this was a big enough topic to get its own thread.
Clemens and Petite are the first names to be mentioned:

Yeah, no doubt the media will be all over it and pan it to the ninth degree. Although I don't expect anything usefull to come out of it. It will be carefully worded, confusing, and essentially accomplish nothing. Than it will be does the media have the stones to try and organize a Baseball boycott...or will they fear that if they pull a stunt like that...they'll put themselves out of jobs?
The other thing is will it name players...or will it discuss the extent to which they were involved? I heard their key witness was a New York Mets club house attendent.
MLB's players union is really mum on the issue too. So I suspect that there is a lot of guilt to some pretty high profile guys and hence why they have absolutely no willingness to co-operate. They've bent owners over the table forever, maybe the media can target the union as being the problem and make them crack?

ESPN has a list of questions the Mitchell report should answer:
http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&q=m...-8&sa=N&tab=wn
"And will Mitchell criticize the owners and commissioner Bud Selig?"
MLB turned a blind-eye to steroid use when baseballs started flying out of the park. Fans love the long ball. Look at the attention given to the McGwire/Bonds home run chases in recent years.
The current drug policy gives players plenty of opportunity to clean up before a test.
Players aren't the only ones to blame. Steroid use was encouraged and some clubs facilitated that use.

If Clemens is involved it doesn't surprise me. Bonds has always suspicious because he seemed to get better as he got older. Nothing was ever said about Clemens who was always a great pitcher, but how many power pitchers like Clemens can keep it up in to their mid 40's. Not even some of the old knuckleballers pitched as long.

I think we all had our hunches about Clemens. Some are speculating Ripken will be named too.
If this is true, they should get hammered the same as Bonds - or Barry is right about the race card.
And why does the NFL avoid scrutiny? - I'm sure steroid use is even more rampant in the NFL.
Report comes out at noon MST.

I hope my son one day grows up to play a un-asterixed professional sport.

for fun let's try and speculate who is not on the list. I am guessing Derek Jeter will not be on that list!

I hear many Yankees will be named.
Mitchell I hear has some connection with the Red Sox.
80 names will be on the list?

I sure hope some Red Sox are on the list or else this report loses all it's credibility.
Any Jays rumored?

As a guess.... I would think Glaus.
If Clemmons and other star player are on that list do they now get an "*" beside all of their records?

I would think Pujols is a slam dunk to be on that list. He is the size of a very large Gorilla!

For current guys Glaus is probably the most likely. But David Segui, Brad Fulmer, and Jose Canseco were all with the Jays around the time Clemens was and his career magically seemed to turn around....
So many guys you look at don't look a thing now like they did when they broke into the league. Manny Ramirez as an Indian vs. Manny today....not even close, it's almost as night and day as Barry Bonds.
You almost have to throw out anything that any player has done between 1997 and 2005. I wonder how this would affect players like Griffey and Frank Thomas who were putting up big numbers in the early 90's only to see their numbers stay consistant with what players their age in the past do while everyone else exploded. If these guys avoid being named in the Mitchel report..would they still be considered clean, or do they also get a lot of skepticism?

another list with some of the same names:
Varitek, Sheffield, Clemens, Nixon, Jason Giambi, Aaron Boone, Damon, Nomar, Pettitte.
If these are all true, just about every star is being named. People have to ease off their demonization of Bonds now, I'd think.

Mitchell is front office director with the Red Sox. He'll probably implicate the entire Yankees team, including the bat boy, the mascot and the P.A. announcer.

Manny would surprise me. He is too lazy to be doing all the working out that he would need to do to take advantage of the roids. I think he is just pure natural talent. I was 180 in college, and am 220/230 now. Its not all fat I don't think , I run marathons/lift weights etc. I could get myself in lean muscular shape at about 220 with some dedicated weight training. Some people put on weight easy.

Damon being on that list doesen't suprise me at all, one of his interviews with ESPN he talked about "unless someone gave me something I didn't know about", which raised a lot of peoples eyebrows.
Defintley a dark day for baseball. Will be intresting to see some of the players named, how they'll react when the cameras in front of them.
