If your heel is lifting when you skate, that most likely means your skate is too big for your feet. Your heel should never lift up when skating, otherwise you lose alot of your power in the stride.
Generally skates fit bout one to two sizes smaller than your actual shoe size, depending on the manufacturer.

Not a dumb question at all, but is a hard question to answer over a message board, and not in person.
As many have said, typically people size down from their shoe size... What I find however is that many people have too big of shoes. I know for me atleast I've sized down on my shoe size over the last few years. I had it ingrained in my head that you're supposed to have a thumb level for your toes, however that is more for growing room (which I dont really need anymore ) Now I believe my shoe size is the same as my skates(havent thought about it till this post).
From your description of too much toe room, and heal lift, it sounds like your skates are too big. How are you tieing them though?
You should literally go in and try on every pair of skates and every different size you can fit your foot into. While skates do take time to break in, they should still be comfortable in the store.
Or did you buy used?

Another thing I learnt when I was picking up skates, the size of your feet changes depending on whether you are sitting down or standing up. More precisely, your feet expand up to a hlaf size when standing. Normally for most people, skates are usually 1 size smaller than their regular shoe size. As suggested by other ppl on the board, you really got to try on a few pairs until you find one that is comfortable. Lastly, I was given a lot of advice to get "Super feet", the insoles for skates to improve balance and stability, but that would also change the way the skates fit

Good advice...
Tks guys...
They are Bauer Challengers. I bought them on sale at CT a year or so ago.
I ran in, grabbed a pair of size 9's and left in a hurry (Cranky kid)
I think I'll head over to sports swap and see what is available in used.
Trade in my old ones and get a bit back on the new(er) pair.
Cheers.

I am not a great skater but my kids are getting older and we are starting to make use of the local community rink on sunny afternoons.
I picked up a pair of skates but only went with the size of my shoe as reference.
It seems that they are really tight around the middle of my foot and loose at the toes and around the heel.
When I stride forward I can feel my heel coming loose from the skate.
I am thinking that they are too skinny for my wide foot. If that is possible.
Are skates available off the shelf for varying foot types ??
Or do I have to bend over for a custom fit pair....

Get em 2 sizes shorter like Paul Coffey used to! You'll be lightning quick in no time!

I see alot of adults, including adults who tie thier kids skates, tie them badly. They should be tight all the way up but not overly tight across the middle part of your foot, as it tends to flatten out the bridge of your foot and cause pain. Also, they should be tied all the way to the top hole, but not tight enough that it restricts the blood flow to your foot, or you'll end up with alot of pain from that as well.
Of course you're allowed to tie your skates and wear whatever size you want, but from a comfort perspective, tieing them improperly can be a big source of problems. You'd be amazed at how many 5 year old kids playing minor hockey are almost in tears wearing skates cause mom or dad tied them WAY to tight...

Some players dont even tie the top eyelet, so try different lace methods. You dont want your your top holes on the skate to be too tight, especially if you want to become a more effective skater. Do not tie it too tight at the top two eyelets, as that will restrict your ankle movement.
Proper lacing at the top will allow for better inner/outer edge control than if it is super tight at the top, due to proper ankle movement. Edge control is key for effective skating. You dont want it super tight in the middle, however, you should have it somewhat tighter than at the top or toe.

I always had major foot pain with skates, I think I have wide feet. I need a new pair this year so I want to go somewhere to get the right fit for me, any suggestions as to a store where they know what they're doing?

Try out Adrenaline Sports, I just picked up a new pair there about 3 weeks ago and they were the best place I went. I hit up 4 different sport checks, 2 Sportmarts, Sport Swap and Canadian Tire. Each of the places I went had decent skates (Canadian Tire did not have anything even mid-quality, all the men's skates were low end brands and less than $100), all the prices were similar though, only Adrenaline Sports had employees that knew anything about skates.
Basically they were the last place I went, and the only one I walked out of satisified with. They ask you questions about how you skate, how you tie your laces, and try to recommend 3 skates that should fit you based on your answers. My problem with Sport Chek was that I couldn't find a skate that fit properly. 9 was too big in the toe, 8.5 was too small in the width. Adrenaline pulled out an 8.5W ( yes they make skates for wider feet now) and they fit perfectly. They also punch out any uncomfortable parts in the skate, and heat mold them to your foot (depends on the skate as some can't be heat molded) They sharpened them and sent me on my way with a new pair of skates.
Punching, molding and sharpening are all included in the purchase price and you have a comfort guarantee (can't remember the time length), where you can bring them back in and they will try to punch out areas that rub, or remold the boot.

Do you get major foot pain on the bottom of your feet.. right in the arch?
That's exactly what happens to me if I skate for longer than 10 minutes. It never used to happen when I was younger, so I'm assuming it was the cheap skates I used... but yeah, I think I have wide and flat feet and my arches just start killing me.

Skates fit 1 and a half sizes smaller than regular running shoes. So if you're a 9 skate, that means you'd have a 10.5 size shoe. (I can do simple math! Yippee!)
If you are looking for a new pair of skates, I'd recommend a pair that you can get heat fitted. Break-in time is virtually nil when you do that. Or you could get them punched out if they're a little narrow in the arch area.
I've got super wide feet, and I fit beautifully into the Easton C12's. They're a EE width, and they're the nicest skate I've ever bought. Really light and super comfy. Only problem is that they aren't very tough. I'm on them 4 or 5 times a week minimum, and they're starting to split at the toe, which sucks.

You'll see that from a bad fit, (ie to narrow) or from tieing your skates to tight across the bridge of your foot...

Yeah, that's why I want to try somewhere that knows what they're doing, if I need a wide skate I want to get one.
