Maybe. If that is the case, the company shouldn't be doing them at all.

We have to do these yearly. We do a self-appraisal and then we compare ours with what the project managers have for us. It can be a little awkward as sometimes they don't see or know everything you do. Most of the time we agreed though.

I'm glad I keep a daily work journal though. It sure came in handy and reminded them of stuff they forgot. Heck, I dealt with a couple of things this year that were delegated to me, but they didn't know and gave the other person credit for it (ie. the person who delegated). What really got me was that the person who delegated to me had their appraisal before mine and somehow forgot to mention it...

It is a little humbling though. There is a portion where you are supposed to list your doctorates and honourary degrees.

Will benefit from continuing to place her focus on detail and consistency in the quality of his work. Asking questions and seeking clarification on work processes from subject matter experts will greatly aid in increasing her understanding of work processes. Additional focus on the official procedures will help absorb more of the process-related aspects of her work.

This is pretty bloody cliche, too. Is there any way you can give examples? Hard evidence that this is true?

I don't mind the way our company goes through this. The boss and I sit down at the beginning of the year and set out goals that I want to acheive as well as what he wants me to acheive. We come to an agreement over 5 goals, and at the end of the year I write up a self assessment which we both go over and make whatever changes seem necessary. Then it goes up the corporate ladder who knows how far.

It gives you a chance to shoot for something specific throughout the year, and you know that your boss feels that these goals you're shooting for are valuable to yourself and the company.

BTW, I'd hate to have a boss who fell for the 'perfectionist' routine. I don't like working with idiots, and I definitely hate working for idiots.

And there's the first statement in your self appraisal

I've always wanted to see that.

And then they do the external appraisal of you by other people in the department and they come back with

"He's a little too positive of his own vision"

"Man, his eye's are like death all cold and flinty. He looks at me and my soul screams"

"Tick tick tick"
i was actually surprised at some of the comments about what i wrote. should a person really say "my co workers and i don't get along because i work too much"? of course not. i will make sure to put my kidding delimiters in next time. but never mind...its okay.

okay. here is the real deal and enough of my kidding around.

anyone that works for a company likely has goals either set for them, set by themselves, or agreed to at some point.

my comments had nothing to do with that.

if you have done anything in the corporate world, you know that real performance appraisals areas or measures should always be "SMART" (google it or see it on wikipedia). if you have goals or targets like that, you should have spent the year ensuring that you met your base targets and if possible your stretch targets or evaluation criteria. When you are doing your self appraisal, you should have documented, or better yet, your boss documented, your behaviours that met your targets.

IRL, you should be able to state that you met your goals and provide an example or two where relevant. for example, if your target was one information session per year, you might list the 2 lunch and learn topics and the dates that you did them on your self appraisal.

The goal is to give your leaders opportunities to reward you, and the best way to do that is to ensure that you did the things that you were to do since your last performance appraisal.

personally, i always like to see people managing their career and not just spinning stuff out, and part of that is showing that you know what your targets were and what you did to meet them.

the best one is if you are in sales, met your targets and had some highlight wins. not everyone is in sales but if you can present your agreed performance in a met or exceeded manner, you will find your appraisal going well and likely support from your boss.

i hope this helps more than my non funny other ones.

I once had to do a self evaluation on a temporary job (I was working it while back in school, and everyone knew I'd be quitting in June at the latest). Was asked to do the self eval in May. I made sure I was honest, since I was hoping to be bought out rather than having to quit. Under one section, which asked for constructive advice, I talked about how a union would help the work environment (this was a notoriously anti-union shop). It was kind of fun, but it was a unique situation.

But, it was kind of cathartic actually being able to say that I was "unmotivated" and that I really didn't care about my job.

(I hasten to point out that I love my current job, and that the old job was one of the main catalysts in me going back to school for a new career.)
