You are correct that making a sweeping generalization is typically incorrect, however, I think my recent experience gives me the precedence to say what I have been saying. In fact, I'm sure plenty of people have been running into a similar experience, they just are afraid to state it, lest they have their throats jumped down by the self-appointed PC brigade.

None of this is a tirade against any minority, it is a tirade against selfish, arrogant individuals who are only concerned with themselves and have no idea what it means to be part of a community. There are people who are used to having their cities be the crapholes of the world (LA, New York, Detroit, etc.) and think they can treat Calgary like that as well.

That is not okay.

There is a difference between back pedalling and clarification you know.

As for my exception to Asians, it probably has to do with the fact that regardless of my relationship, I've always felt that way. Most come from cultures where you have to work your goddamn ass off to even be mediocre, and they are just happy to be here and achieve more for their effort.

I'm never one to accept doing something half-assed, and the extreme amount of half-assed Americanization happening here is appalling.

And guess what? White people are the most half-assed, lazy, self-gratifying bunch out there, so no, it isn't against all minorities. It is against money driven jerks who won't give a person the time of day.

Well, it could be said that America is THE world power because they constantly exploit countries (like old Colonials did when THEY were the world powers) and start wars to bolster their manufacturing sector.

In reality, America did used to have a fantastic work ethic that quickly eroded in the late 60s

Im not sure if that's the case anymore. The reason America was successful was their ability to draw in the brightest minds from around the world and give them an environment to flourish in. It was a case of "a few amazing minds leading the way", rather than "hard working perfectionists all around". A huge chunk of American innovation in the first half of the 20th century was achieved by immigrants who flocked to the country because of its open-armed policies. It was very smart of them to do.

Personally, I think their lack of willingness to bring new people in these days, and their somewhat lack-lustre attitude in leading the world into uncharted waters is what's slowly killing America. While the rest of the world forges ahead, Americans are too busy arguing about Evolution. America is definitely still the leading world power...but I think much of that status is based on past performance, not current trends. They need to let smart people do smart things again.

Well I would look at the patents and nobel prizes. Doesn't look like a downward trend. What makes America successful is the bottom line. Straight up greed. If you have a good idea and work at it you can become mega rich. The wealth of the richest people in America is either made by them or goes back one or two generations. Europe and Asia still have remnants of former aristocracy and elite classes. People come to America because it has been shown that class and social caste systems won't hold you back. They can make their own way. Don't confuse American culture with American business. It is the welfare burdens they don't want. I can guarantee there will always be room for a couple more scientists and engineers.

Just to add to that. I know a lot of students from China who are basically on a very tight leash from their parents. They demand that official transcripts are being sent back every single semester. I knew a girl in my first year where she would get a specific amount of money to live on if she got an A. So if she got 4 A's instead of 5, she should would get less money to live on for that semester. But there are also other kids I know who basically get free money to be here and "improve" themselves. And basically they come here, party, do drugs and who just don't give a crap about academics.

I know you should love your kid but that's pretty ridiculous.

I also had an obscene amount of spending money. I had taken a year off to work and also qualified for a student loan. Also bought a car. I was a sugar-mom at U of C haha! The good old days.

I completely agree with you on this... I know for a fact that if I get into trouble with the law, I will have to pay the price (or whatever my punishment may be), my parents won't step in. But for parents to sell their house and bail their kid out... they're not teaching their kid anything AT ALL, may even hinder their maturing process.

To contribute to the breaking of stereotypes, though in a totally trivial way, I can attest to how it's not just North Americans that pack away masses of food. I thought it was kind of a NA and not Asia thing when I was living in Taiwan, but since moving to Shanghai I am continually dumbfounded by how much food my Chinese roomies pack away in a single sitting. I almost feel shamed by my inability to keep up. It's the same for my coworkers too.

It's just a good thing the 'Asians can't drink' stereotype is holding true so far, or I would have no pride left to spare.
