Default World's Hardest Drinkers

http://money.canoe.ca/Forbes/2007/12/03/4704666.html

All but one of the World's 15 Heaviest-Drinking Countries are in Europe, a continent where cultural traditions--and tax policies on alcohol--die hard.

Luxembourg, where residents pound down 15.5 liters of alcohol in a year, on average, ranks first. Close behind are France (14.2 liters), Ireland (also 14.2 liters, a lot more of it from beer), Hungary (12 liters) and the Czech Republic (11.8 liters).

Come on Ireland - let's go for gold in 2008!

On a side note, if you look at the links once you open that page, for "World's Cleanest Cities", Calgary ranks #1.

15 liters does not seem like very much.

If you only had one bottle of wine per week, isn't that about 40 liters?

sure but once you add in children, pregnant women and nuns, the per person average gets diluted

Its pure alcohol:

"Rankings are based on the number of liters of pure alcohol consumed per person per year, from beer, wine and spirits combined (the three have progressively higher percentages of alcohol content)."

Mang.. i drank 17 liters in 50hrs while at Oktoberfest this year... That alone should bring up our average.

Are they talking about 15 litres of pure alcohol or 15 litres of alcoholic beverages?

To use your wine example, suppose someone drank only one 750ml bottle of wine every week. At 12% alcohol, that's 90ml of pure alcohol per week, or 4.68L per year.

[Edit]
What Flame of Liberty said.

If wine has an alcohol content of 11.5%, then my example (40L), yields 4.6 liters of pure alcohol. You would have to drink 3 bottles of wine per week to get near 15 liters.

Ah it's easy. You and I in 1997 went to 4 of those top 5 countries and drank 15 litres in each one! Although that waitress in Salzburg did describe you as a "slow drinker".

That's because I was the only one not constantly spilling and dropping my pints on the floor . . .

We used to sample Everclear and Alcool (from Quebec) with alcohol contents of 95%.

The "Purple Jesus" was popular back in residence - alcool and grape kool-aid punch.

Meh ... that study probably coincided with my European vacation in 2006 and that skewed the results.

Exactly. Canadian and Aussie youths travelling through Europe are drinking oceans of booze.

Bah, the average eastern european grandmpa can drink any Canadian youth under the table. Seriously, there is no comparison between the two continents. We drink a lot of alcohol...but they are basically drowning in the stuff.

Shooters.

Here's a good prank:

Pour everyone an Everclear shooter - except give yourself water. After a couple of rounds, they will be passed out. Then the real humiliation can begin.

I disagree - they drink more often than us, but we can drink much more in one sitting. Or Aeneas and I are clearly freaks.

To test this theory, I think calgarypuck needs to sponsor Aeneas and I for a European fact-finding mission.
