Default x92.9 Calgary's New Rock Alternative?

If you are reading this that means my question mark worked and intrigued you to read

Anyway.

I've had an issue with X lately. I feel they've gone to mainstream and wanted to get some thoughts.

When they first came on air I loved it. 90's rock, good alternative stuff, and a station that plays tool. How sweet it was.
But now, it seems to have gone Indie, and has turned into just another radio station.

They've started playing the same songs all day and to me have lost their identity.

Anyone else feel the same way?

From the start they felt like Cjay minus the classic crap.

I'm fine with it, though I wish they would alter their playlist to be more like Sonic in Edmonton.

It was never really "alternative". Mostly Green Day clones over and over. Fuel is better.

CJSW is the place to go for real alternative music. Or CKUA or CBC Radio 2.

That smart-aleck cool girl in all the X-92.9 promos is really annoying - the girl with the canned voice and above-it-all attitude.

I had an issue with the DJs. Like I want to hear about your beer-league hockey game last night for 10 minutes.

[rant]
That's my biggest complaint about this station. The DJ's are terrible. And they talk about their lives, like we give a . I am listening to the radio to listen to music, not hear about the drama going on in your life. Seriously.. STFU, and get back to the music.

I can understand a few stories that may relate to the song you are playing, or if something amazing happened at the concert they where at the night before. But I remember listening to it earlier this year, and they where talking about how his GF broke up with him because of something he had on facebook...

Hey, they might have been talking about the night we played them!

In all seriousness, I haven't listened to X92.9FM since Fuel 90.3 came on the air.

The X92.9 DJ booth is open to 11th Ave - you can wander by and make your "requests" - ex. stop sucking so much.

I 'm starting to listen to fuel a little more, but both fuel and 92.9 are better than what we had for 'mainstream' radio before so I'm not really complaining

I'm curious about the original post though...you say they have gone more mainstream and more indie....I think I'm just getting old, but are those terms synonymous?

(ps I have heard Tool on 92.9 twice in last 2 days if that helps)

Yeah we all know how that morning shows takes to listener input. Ie that contest they used to run where people had to stump them while they had 5 minutes to look on wikipedia/google for the answer and if it wasn't on google/wikipedia they deemed the question stupid and/or irrelevant and then hung up on callers.

I, for one (and perhaps the only one), still enjoy it. If you like the 90s stuff, tune in at nine am and pm for - wait for it - The 90s at 9.

To a certain extent, I agree about the DJs. I don't mind listening to a bit of witty banter but sometimes it gets too much.

I personally enjoy some of the DJ's, but thats because I only listen on occasion now, so I don't hear it on a constant basis.

And in response to the indie and mainstream comparison. Indie has become mainstream. Its cool to like Indie now, so its now over played on the radio.

I don't mind what X plays sometimes, but since the indie stuff has taken over I find myself not listening anymore.

As for Fuel, another one I do like, but then goes and plays stuff I'm not really into. I've never really been able to find a radio station here I like.

I really enjoy the music, it's a much better selection then the tired and true CJAY playlist that only changes every 6 weeks to update the latest top 10. However, you never get to hear any music because the DJ's are way too in love with the sounds of their own voices.

It takes me about 35 minutes to get into work in the morning, and on a few occasions I've only heard one song in that timespan. Now when I'm driving in I will hit the X92 preset on my audio deck and if it's a song, I'll stay there. If not, on to the next.

When they first aired, it was nothing but music - and it was wonderful. Even if you add in commercials, weather, traffic and news it would be a monumental improvement on the brain-dead banter. It's so friggin' transparent.

DJ1: "This morning I'm going to disagree with something you're saying that makes total sense; basically I'll take the ######ed opposite opinion just because it's controversial."

DJ2: "Hey, didn't we do that bit yesterday?"

DJ1: "Yeah, we've been doing it for the past year, but It never gets old."

Well Evan Baron has come back to Regina. I know he used to piss a lot of people off with his anti-Calgary attitude.
The bottom line is X is just another commercial radio station.
Fuel may be a decent Adult Alternative station but with a 1.1 share they are in big trouble.

stars and radiohead for sure. I suppose if someone was really feeling avantgarde then perhaps the Sadies or Ween but I wouldn't think so

I bet that morning show of theirs is weighing them down significantly. That Frazier woman has an annoying raspy voice and her constant ravings about not being able to find a man after age 40 is just as tired and old as her rantings about not being able to find a man after age 30 when she was on 'Power 107' many moons ago.

Radio ratings just released:

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...4-5b75bb3e5be0

Not far behind QR77 as the number two station in the city was another Corus entity, Country 105, with a 9.7 per cent share of the market. Soft rock station Lite 96 came in third with 9.2 per cent.

Rounding out the top 10 was: JACK FM (7.8 per cent), VIBE 98.5 (7.6), CJAY 92 (7.2), CBC Radio 1 (6.7), Q107 (5.5), Classic Country 1060 (4.1), and the new alternative rock station X92.9 (3.3).

As for the other two new radio stations which launched this year, Energy 101.5 was tied for 11th place with CBC Radio 2, capturing a three per cent market share, while FUEL 90.3 was at the bottom of the list, with a 1.2 per cent share of the market.

Yikes - the three worst stations have the best ratings.

No doubt. I'll listen to Fuel in the evenings, but Fuel and Jack are two stations I won't even touch on the morning drive becuase I simply can't stand the DJs.

As far as Evan Baron being gone, no loss there.
