I've also heard it takes a really cold snap to kill off pine beetles, and part of the reason for their recent proliferation has been the relatively warm winters.

Where did you get that information from?
I had always understood it to be far less dramatic than that. Something more like a couple of weeks of -20.

I feel you guys lived in Minnesota my whole life, I am stationed up in North Dakota. The temp's aren't that cold but the wind kills you. It was -30 and all the new guys that just got stationed were going thru shock I tell you!

I'll be home around Christmas--maybe I can bring my skates and play a little outdoor hockey for once! I brought them last year and the year before, only to find that though it was (just barely) cold enough, none of the rinks by where my family lives had been flooded.
Maybe this year will be different!

Gadzooks. This'll be my first full southern alberta winter in three years. I claim to like it but sometimes it gets the better of me. I love chinooks and whoever posted the comment otherwise should move to sask or man. booo to anyone that doesn't love a few warm days in the midst of a cold winter. Unless you're headache afflicted. In which case you should move anyways.
