I've also heard it takes a really cold snap to kill off pine beetles, and part of the reason for their recent proliferation has been the relatively warm winters.

We need a month of about –35 degree temperatures to kill off the larvae.

This is good news as long as the chinooks can stay away. They always melt the outdoor ice .

Where did you get that information from?
I had always understood it to be far less dramatic than that. Something more like a couple of weeks of -20.

10 days I thought of -15 or less.

Whatever, so long as it kills them.

There's some serious cold heading that way from Vancouver tonight...

I just looked it up and it depends...
Quote:
Cold hardiness is acquired. As winter temperatures decline, the beetle develops antifreeze in its blood. By mid-winter, most larvae can withstand -40°C for short periods. For cold temperatures to have their biggest impact on mortality, they have to come early or late in the season, when the beetle is least tolerant. Also, the cold temperatures must persist for several days because, with insulating bark and snow, it can take considerable time before under-bark temperatures decline to lethal levels.

^^^ Everybody's right!!!

Stupid beetles. I hope this winter gets them. Driving the Coquihalla gives a clear indication of the total disaster these things are capable of causing.

Went to the nearest rink to fire some pucks due to frustrations from watching the game and the ice was awesome!

Keep cold Weather, Keep cold!

I'll be home around Christmas--maybe I can bring my skates and play a little outdoor hockey for once! I brought them last year and the year before, only to find that though it was (just barely) cold enough, none of the rinks by where my family lives had been flooded.

Maybe this year will be different!

Gadzooks. This'll be my first full southern alberta winter in three years. I claim to like it but sometimes it gets the better of me. I love chinooks and whoever posted the comment otherwise should move to sask or man. booo to anyone that doesn't love a few warm days in the midst of a cold winter. Unless you're headache afflicted. In which case you should move anyways.
