Some new Jays rumours today:

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news...=.jsp&c_id=tor

Bedard from the Orioles? Lincecum from the Giants? I like the sounds of both of those. If all it takes is Glaus to snag Lincecum I would be all over that, though I have a feeling they'd want a little more than just Glaus.

Yowsa. You can add Jason Bay from the Pirates to the Jays as well as part of the rumor mill. Bay had a really down season and is owed a fair chunk of money (~ 10 per).

Now, he is a Right handed bat, and you all know how I hate that, but from 2003-2006 he still batted over .900 OPS vs. Right handers for those 4 seasons. So his splits aren't drastic like some of the other Jays players.

Matt Cain is also being talked about from the Giants as well - as well the Giants are interested in an Alex Rios as a return. And they have (as mentioned above) also expressed interest in Glaus.

Burnett/Halladay/Marcum/McGowan/Cain-Lincecum would be absolutely amazing.

Even if Rios/Glaus/Lind were gone and the total exchange was Bay + Cain + a 3B prospect (LH who has some upside), we'd come out way ahead IMHO. I like Bay a LOT as a player.

I would kill to see Jason Bay on the Jays. The guy had a down year last season but he had a .961 OPS in 2005 which is just ridiculous and he is still only 29 years old.

I'm still a little dicey on the Rios for Cain/Lincecum rumours though. I really like Lincecum a lot but I can't help but feel a little nervous about a 5'11 pitcher who throws a big fastball.

Bedard is an intriguing possibility and his numbers have been near the top of the league over the last few years. If we could somehow come out of the off-season with Bedard and Bay minus Burnette and Rios, I would be jumping for joy.

Just an update.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7528844

The proposed trade of outfielder Alex Rios for either San Francisco's Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum rests with the Giants' decision-makers, according to major-league sources.
Oh I'm giddy. I LOVE this trade idea. It would be tough to give up Rios, but really, you can benefit more by adding a decent LHB at the corner and platooning him.

I'm hoping for Lincecum. He has higher upside, more electric stuff, and a better K Rate. Cain is very good in his own right, and the giants apparently value him a little more. The problem with Lincecum is that he is a little guy, and may have potential arm problems. (5'10, 155 lbs).

Check his stats

We're talking about a legitimate future ace if he stays healthy. FYI Rios is going to be very expensive very soon. Lincecum is a guy the Jays would control for 5 more seasons.

Looks like Bay could end up with the Indians.

Yeah, Cleveland likely has more of the required assets to get a guy like Bay than Toronto does. I don't think the Jays were ever that interested and that they were only mentioned because Bay is Canadian.

Trading Rios would be tough, but he is sort of a guy without a place in the Toronto lineup. He's a guy who should be a number 3 hitter, and thats pretty much what a healthy Vernon Wells is. You can't trade Wells...so the unfortunate option is to trade Rios. If the Red Sox are looking to add a guy like Santana, than in order to have a prayer you'll need one hell of a pitching rotation to try and match them.

Yesss Buck Coats, JP does it again.

Had to get a kick out of an article found on BJW, good ol Marty York writing an article on how the Jays are pursuing Andy Pettite and Roger Clemens. This was just before Pettite re-signed with the Yanks earlier this week. How this guy ever got a job at sportsnet before baffles me

from espn.com's blog:

1:57 p.m., from Jayson Stark
• The Giants and Blue Jays have a deal on the table that would send outfielder Alex Rios to San Francisco for pitcher Tim Lincecum. But the Blue Jays appear to be more motivated to make that trade than the Giants. Two baseball men who spoke with the Giants describe them as being "indecisive" about whether they really want to move Lincecum for a big bat and, if they do, about whom they should get for him. Toronto has decided its best strategy to survive in the loaded AL East is to stockpile as many power arms as possible. So the Blue Jays would sacrifice offense if they could pick up an arm like Lincecum.

The Giants are apparently making calls around to free agent pitchers so it sounds like Lincecum for Rios really could get done today. I'm still a little weary about that deal but it frees up some cash and it would give us a legitimately awesome rotation if Lincecum can stay healthy. I would personally rather have Cain though, he is already more proven that Lincecum and he's more of a typical power pitcher (so I'd be less worried about long-term injuries). Then again, Lincecum could very well be the next Martinez/Liriano.

Likewise, it sounds like we're in contact with Lofton to play left field next year. He has posted some surprisingly solid OPSs over the past few years despite his old age and he might look good in a platoon situation.

Awesome. I really hope this gets done. The Jays *should* have a good enough offense to survive without Rios...if they stay healthy of course.

But Lincecum is awesome.

Well Lofton would serve two purposes for the Jays, add in an extra left handed bat that the team needs in a really bad way, and bring in a guy who can be a proper lead off type hitter. There should be more than enough right handed hitters who can play in the outfield who can post a 850 or better OPS against left handed pitching to handle a platoon role.

The have a pretty mediocre offense with Rios. With Glaus another year older and another year off the juice and Thomas another year older as well those two have big question marks. Not sure taking out their best offense player will mean they are "good enough."

I think this is the best way to go for the Jays in competing with the Red Sox and Yankees as they will never be able to outhit them because there are always hitters out there available for the Yanks and Sox to buy. They have to load up on pitching and hope that everyone has career years if they hope to beat either of the big two.

I see things that way as well. Likewise, the Jays could always turn around and use Burnett as a trading chip if they acquire Lincecum (or they could run with a beastly top 5 of Halladay-Burnett-McGowan-Marcum-Lincecum).

I don't see what the problem is.

Apparently the Jays should neglect to make any moves that don't involve top-name players. Who cares if the team has no depth, right?

I would question what Burnett's value is now considering his age, contract and injury history. It seems he is past the age of young guy with great potential who just needs to stay healthy to injury-prone vet who can sometimes pitch great but for the most part will be a .500 guy who you never know what you are going to get game to game.

Although pitchers values are outrageous right now, so he probably could bring a better hitter than he is worth.

Keeping Burnett gives the Jays a slightly worse rotation than the Sox and a slightly better rotation than the Yanks. (Considering neither has Santana). If the Jays lose Burnett and then go with a Chacin or Litsch, then I think they lose any advantage pitching-wise over the Yanks and are clearly a step below the Sox. (again with neither having Santana)

The main thing for the Jays is they need to develop a guy like Lincecum rather than trade for him for them to compete with the big boys.
