Default RCMP not what it used to be

Calgary Herald Article

With events like the RCMP pepper spraying peaceful demonstrators, tasering people to death and having officers killed due to incompetence (training or command). You got to wonder if Dr. Cooper is right.

I think this sums up a lot of the motivation of the author, and the general right wing tendency to want a provincial police force.

- the option of providing our own police force, just like the grown-up provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Just another image thing IMHO for Alberta Separatists. The laws of the country are the same, and the the method of which by they are enforced will always be up for debate, regardless of whether it's a Mountie or APP.

If you think an APP force would have handled the Vancouver incident flawlessly, the history of Dudley George and the OPP or the Oka / SQ would suggest that a provincial police force is as likely to make such errors in judgement.

My bet is the RCMP is exactly what it used to be.

We just have a better idea of what it is now. I bet if you'd passed around the digicams back in 1950 you might have caught on to an extra scandal or two.

How about some frontier justice 1886 style? The RCMP hasn't ever really been Dudley Doright or Due South.

The Untouchables was on last night and the RCMP charged the guys on the bridge mounted on horse and all firing their 6-shooters. this is the way it should be!

Haha, no kidding. I was just reading some stuff on the Herbert Norman case in the 1950s. Some serious RCMP bungling there.
