Roadtrips
So I just found out today that I have over a month off from school (university doesn't start again until Jan. 14th!)
I am looking at going on a roadtrip, driving my car down to the States and seeing the sites. I am interested in going for cheap, and wondering how far I can realistically go in about a week or two, what I can see in that range, and how I can do it the cheapest!
How long is the drive to California? I see the Flames have some games coming up there...

Seattle is a nice place to visit, though nicer in the summer. Took me about 13 hours to get there.
They have one of those city pass setups that gets you into the Space Needle, Boeing Museum, Science Centre, Aquarium and a couple others.
Jimi Hendrix Experience museum - stupid expensive to get in, so I didn't, but one funky building. See the Freemont Troll, Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Catch a Sonics or Thunderbirds game. Go to Redmond and throw eggs at Microsoft.

That is a really good idea, I never thought of such a close place... is it "nice" there even though it's not summer? What I mean is, I assume it's like Vancouver with no snow? I am looking to get away from the snow, and see some sights. Another one that comes to mind is the Grand Canyon, but I think that'd a MONSTER drive. I also like the Seattle suggestion because there is something to do there besides "just going" there.

Chances are that there wont be snow in Vancouver. There usually isn't but as I write this, I see there is some in our forecast. But generally, there isn't much snow in Vancouver. I would say 4-5 times a year max and it goes away really fast with the rain. Don't get me wrong, I aint sayin Vancouver has good weather in the winter, it can be dreadful, but if you think Seattle is like Van with no snow, you are wrong. Seattle gets just as much as Vancouver, if not more.

This is a trip my buddy and I took when we were 20.
Calgary --> Las Vegas (20hrs straight driving. Stops in Montana, Salt Lake City, Beaver UT -- it smelled bad there... i kid you not.)
Stayed in Vegas for 3 days.
Vegas to Oceanside / Carlsbad, CA
Stayed here for 4 days. From here, we went on a fishing boat, went down to San Diego, and Tijuana. You can drop your car off in Cali, and walk over the border.
Oceanside to Los Angeles
Stayed here for 5 days. We had tickets to "The Price is Right" but Bob Barker was hospitalized the day of the show! BAH!!! So we went to a talk show instead. We also did all the touristy things here, 6 flags, went to some clubs and saw Star Gunn (Shooter Jenning's old rock band. F'in awesome.)
Los Angeles to San Francisco
Stayed for about 4 days. Did Alcatraz, went to the piers, bridge etc.
San Francisco to Seattle / Gig Harbour
Met his fling who we had met in Mexico the year before. Stayed at her house for a few days. Went into Seattle on the Ferry. Pretty cool.
Then we went home from there. Took about 19 days. Brilliant. Only bad thing was I lost my debit card in Oceanside. We got in a crazy cat-and-mouse game with some farm chicks in Oregon on the way to Washington...
and friggin superstore ruined all my film.
Good times.

I think I'll look up the QC Flames schedule and maybe run into them on this trip too...
Thanks for the idea troutman.
Where has everyone else gone? Anything worth seeing, if it's a once in a lifetime type thing?

Moab, Utah is an amazing place. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are there, definitely worth seeing once. The Grand Canyon is pretty cool. A Vegas road trip is always fun.

Do you need a passport to get into the States yet?

I've done two trips to California on a motorbike in the last two years.
Last year we managed to do 6500 km in just about two weeks, and that was with 3 day stops in San Francisco and Monterey.
The year before we did the same thing in 11 days, with stops in Monterey and Las Vegas.
So I'd recomend that.

Took a day and a half to do San Jose--->Calgary, went up through Sacramento, then Reno, through northern Nevada and Idaho and finally up through Montana. It was so nice to finally get to the Canadian border after being there for 4 months. 4am Lethbridge, we were thinking of stopping there but remembering Tim Horton's is open 24/7 got some coffee and soldiered on.

I'll even buy the first round of beers!
Chicago is a great trip as well, especially if you're into art and museums. The Shedd Aquarium is world class as well.
