Rock is an idiot....never was funny and never will be. I simply cant stand comics who feel the need to use the F word constantly in their stand up routines. Who cares what he says or thinks. I hope the Academy shows him up by not allowing him to star in their movies.

Well, I respect your opinion Cheev, but I couldn't disagree more.
Rock is brilliantly funny, and everything he says here is true. The Oscars are lame, and are pretty much a fashion show. I don't imagine too many beer-swilling jocks are pumped up for a 4.5 hour marathon in front of the TV come Oscar night.
And as for the F-word thing, I think we've discussed it before on here. I don't find it offensive, and while he may use it excessively, it's for emphasis and doesn't in any way serve as a crutch for his humour, which is rich and perceptive. Is he crude sometimes? Hell yes. But my reaction is always "I can't believe he said that, but it's true, so true."
And before somebody jumps on me because they think he's gay bashing, he's not doing that in the least. He's telling it like it is.
Now, all that said, the Academy probably didn't pick the right guy. At least he'll make the show funny for a change. Although from what I saw of Steve Martin last time I watched, I thought he was good.

That may be true, but it is equally true that the AA are not geared towards that guy. I dont understand the point.
A TON of people watch the thing...second only to the Super Bowl IIRC.
Its a bit hypocritical for Rock to accept the job of hosting them, and then turn around and ridiculing them for what they are.
If he hates them so much....pass on the offer to be the face of the night. Makes no sense otherwise.

I agree with Ro (and Rock) 100%...
Award shows are a total waste of time. How fricken many of them are there anyway? Seems like every other sunday my girlfriend is watching another one.
And what do they accomplish at these ceremonies? They pander eachother & wear stuff borrowed from the set of Star Trek, then get up on stage & yammer on about God, my mom, my producer, and of course my fans. Ugh.
Good job Rock. Tell it like it is...

Academy members have privately called for Chris Rock to be removed as host, sources claim, fearing Rock may "tarnish" the reputation of the Academy.
|
personally, I think the oscars were tarnished as soon as they decided to only nominate big fat epics ever year for their awards, and leaving brilliant comedies and more smaller indie movies in their wake.
They are not quite as awful as the Grammy's, but the Oscars are just another marketing tool of the big machines of Hollywood. The 'art" was lost a long-time ago.

Well, its not like Rock was praising the awards before he was hosting, and has reversed his opinions. Its not like the Awards people didn't know who he is, he has tons of material out there to peruse, virtually none of which could be played on cable television.
Why would they think he'd become a totally different person for this one event? I think they knew what they were getting, and wanted it. The members who are calling for his removal aren't the ones planning the event, so it doesn't matter too much what they think at this point.
Given the choice between Rock, Crystal, and Letterman (and Whoopi?) I choose Rock miles ahead of the rest. Crystal and Letterman are funny, but neither have ever made me laugh outloud (except for Letterman's Rupert skits).

Totally agree, the man is too funny. I think its time society realizes that swearing is probably here to stay. The only time I don't think its appropriate are in front of children, class, and business meetings. Otherwise, swear away... it may reflect poorly on you by tightwads, but if you're cruising around talking a blue streak, you probably don't care.

I think he's funny as well but this is pretty lame.
Sounds to me like he's trying to keep some measure of "street cred" by badmouthing the Oscars while also being Mr. Mainstream and collecting his fat paycheques.
On the other hand, the comments attributed to him are not funny in the least and I don't/didn't think he was that stupid so I won't be surprised to hear that those quotes are bogus.

During a recent hate-filled rant, Rock imitated a White House press briefing:
"Mr. President, what about gay marriage? '###### them ******s,'" Rock said of Bush.
This quote is taken way out of context here. In the routine, Rock was making fun of Bush for his unwillingness to say anything definitive on any subject other than gay marriage. Rock wasn't being anti-gay at all at the time. He was making fun of Bush. And it was hilarious.
I generally find Chris Rock to be hilarious. He can be quite over-the-top at times, for sure, but he also hits a lot of issues dead on and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. The comment about straight black men not watching the Oscars was...ill advised, though.

I never said he reversed his "opinion", but why accept the job then?
It's as hypocritical a stand as one could take.
"I hate the whole thing, straight black guys (like myself) dont like them because it's a fashion show etc"
BUT
"Thanks for the XXXX dollars for doing the very show I hate so much."
I hope they do remove him.
I think the guy is pretty funny most of the time, but this is just ridiculous.

if they're gonna attack his swearing, they could at least get their quotes right. he said the f-word many times in that rant, but he did NOT say it there. He said "I'm scared of Al Cracker!"...no f-word in the small bit they took out to attack his swearing in. jeez :P

THAT is a good point.
Didn't think of that. Although, if you read into the material in his routines, I don't know if "street cred" is as big an issue with Rock as you might think.
And T99- you make a good point about him accepting the gig in the first place. Money talks, I suppose.

That's true. I'm just thinking though that maybe someone called him "Billy Crystal" and he's trying to play it both ways so he doesn't look too much of a Hollywood type, while being a Hollywood type.
I hope they don't can him because I'm looking forward to him being the host. He was hilarious on the MTV awards. He mentioned 50 Cent and said "he's taken more shots to the face than Jenna Jameson" and that's the best line ever.

Its hypocritical to take a job, even if you don't really care about it? I don't see how or why.
If he applied for the job, took it, and bad-mouthed it, thats one thing. Something doesn't make me think that he applied, but rather the Awards specifically requested him.
Why request him, knowing his material is fully, completely, and totally offensive to TONS of people? Did the Awards hire him with the caveat that he had to be a different person? I doubt it.
If you've listened to or seen Rock, you'd find that these comments are not out of line with his style of comedy... at all. Why hire him if he's not what they want? Did he sign something saying he had to be 'proper'?
