This is what's happening.

Never read it before myself, but I'm amused that Asians are given a -50 on the SAT score to "normalize" them with everyone else.
Asians win!

Majority of Chinese came to N. America looking for opportunity and a new life (and have done very well for themselves, depending on what context you use).
Blacks and Natives....well, never had much choice in the matter.
I should petition to get scottish added to these forms, I'll be damned before someone assumes I'm english.

Whether they intend to use this data or not for such purposes as a white male I've learned that whenever anything asks for race or sex when applying for something I always leave it blank. Because that way I give myself the best chance of not being discriminated against on the basis of social engineering.

There's also the chance you might lose the benefit of some systemic bias favoring white males built in to the system.

Or they might throw out your application altogether because it wasn't fully completed.

It would be rich if someone filled out the application wrong, and got in for claiming to be a minority and subsequently have to be turned down in person for being white. I smell press articles and lawsuits in such case.

But there should never have been normalization in the first place! Look at the problems it causes.
Here's another story.

I can't find a link, but I remember reading a story about a white girl from South Africa who applied to an American university. For the ethnicity question, she checked the box that said "African", thinking nothing of it. She won a scholarship or something and then when they found out she was white, they had to take it away from her because it was supposed to be awarded to a black student.

Pssh whateva man! Being Chinese and wearing glasses gives you all sort of benefits in life! When applying for jobs, people automatically think I'm good at math and have a strong work ethic. HA! I'll learn'em to stereotype me. I'll learn'em good I tells ya! Forget being PC! I'll take my advantage where I can get it lol.

If they really must ask ethnicity on applications, then they should just have a blank field where you can write it in.

I am getting a science degree and I have to take a "humanities" option, which I chose to fill with philosophy rather than English courses.
