Default Alum Powder

I have looked for this in a few places now with no luck. Been to Market Mall and checked out all the health places, GNC, Nutrition House, Shoppers Drug Mart plus a few other spots there at the mall. No one has Alum in powder form.

Someone on CP must know where I can get some of this stuff. I'm almost to the point of begging, please help me!

Have you checked community natural foods? I don't actually know if they have it, but it is the sort of stuff they would carry. Give em a call, im sure they can help you out.

Just go to Co-op, Safeway, any grocery store. It is a pickling spice, a white powder that when added to pickling brine, makes the pickles crisp. It is in the spice aisle.

It might be hard to find at this time of year, usually carried in the summer when people make pickles, relishes etc. I think Spiceland on Fairmount Drive carries it in slab form.

There has also been controversy about alum powder as in the wrong portions, it is toxic. Perhaps that is why you are having a problem finding it.

I was actually able to find it at Safeway, thanks for your help guys. Don't know why I never thought to try the grocery store but even these places I checked never mentioned it as somewhere to try.

Hahaha, I'm no chemist. Alum powder is the great healer for canker sores. I get them from time to time, I think it was passed down from my pops as he gets them often and my sister gets them, too. When they are bad enough you can't even drink water without it hurting and you start to sound funny when you talk, alum powder is the only form of relief!

My first thought was that he was going to make thermite. I say we still have CSIS show up at Eddie's door.

Why? Do they need their fix?

I used to get canker sores occasionally, almost like clock work. I did some digging around and found out that a common foaming agent in most toothpastes - Sodium Lauryl sulphate (sp?), is known to cause recurring canker sores in some people. The thing that sucks, however, is that this stuff is used in almost every type of tooth paste. I asked my dentist about it, and he said the stuff is added to toothpaste to provide more foaming, but doesnt necessarily have a big impact on the effectiveness of toothpaste.

The only readily available toothpaste I have found that doesnt have SLS is Rembrant Complete. Its in a white box, with green lettering. I used to get canker sores every month or so. Since switching to this toothpaste I havent had a canker sore in a little over two years.

edited to add a link:

http://www.acankersorecure.com/cure-...ker-sores.html

I was skeptical when I switched away from toothpastes with SLS in it, but it seriously seems to have done the trick for me.

Wow Moose, I never knew about that. I brush my teeth regularly, sometimes more than 3 times a day and it really does seem to get worse with more brushing. I always thought if I brushed my teeth it would help but I guess it's the opposite. I will definitely go get some of that stuff and see how it works.

Renny, yeah I usually just wash my hands good and then dab a bit on the end of my finger and stick it right on the sore spot. It kinda hurts at first and then your mouth starts to drool uncontrollably but once that's done it really numbs the pain for quite a while. You can put it in some water and just swirl it around in your mouth but I usually just put it right on the sore.

I will definitely be trying out some of that toothpaste though, thanks a bunch for that info!

I got the toothpaste name wrong - its actually Rembrant PLUS that doesn't contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. Rembrant Complete actually does have Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in it. I just noticed this today buying toothpaste at the drug store. Most toothpastes have their ingredients listed on the box, so check "Non Medical Ingredients" to see if SLS is on there.

Hey thanks a lot! I've had onging canker sores for quite sometime. I've actually wondered if they might be some sort of STD...,lol. Phew, still clean, I guess.
My family used to have alum powder always around as a kid. I think Dad stopped using it because of concerns w/ Alzheimer's, or something. It totally works, though.

Edit: I just checked the ingredents on my Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste. Looks like it contains SLS.Damn. It has been the only Toothpaste I've found that doesn't make me wanna gag &/or puke everytime I brush.
Here's hoping the Rembrandt stuff is'nt gag-inducing

I work for Boots the Chemists (a pharmacy chain) in the UK and there has recently been claims that Aluminium Sulphate (Alum) in deodorants and anti-perspirants can increase the risk of cancer.

It's as yet unproven, but as most under arm products contain it, it certainly gives pause for thought.

Moose, I picked up on that when I went to a Shoppers to get some of it. I made sure to check the ingredients and I've been using it ever since you mentioned it and I do notice it helping already. Hopefully I won't need the alum anymore, especially when you hear stuff like what's mentioned above.
