Big discovery in stem cell research
http://www.ksn.com/news/local/11493481.html
Medical research is making so much progress. I think we will see some dramatic breakthroughs in our lifetime.

They will be hard pressed to come up with something.

That is what (some) religious wackos were waiting for. A way to harvest stem cells without killing a viable zygote.

Big news. Though the 'problems' with embryonic stem cells are still insane to me. Seeing how the blastocysts used for extracting stem cells are thrown out otherwise...

Well, if I were one, which I'm not, I think I'd say that's pretty good return on a rib. I wonder if using menstrual fluids as a stem cell source will make recipients inexcplicably moody and cranky once a month?
Seriously though, that's encouraging news. Finding an adult source can only be a good thing.

I'm not a religious whacko but I do have issues with embrionic stem cell research because it clashes with my religious beliefs. If you are genuinely curious, PM l me and I can explain why.
To give you just a simple idea as to why some "religious whackos" are opposed, it's like this:
By my religious belief: Humans are intelligent design. Our lives are sacred beyond all other animals and life. Sacred Human life begins at conception. To "farm" Human tissues from an embrionic (sacred life) source, is to commit an intrinsically evil act as it abuses one sacred life for the benefit of another life, therefore killing an innocent life for an increased chance to save another life.
Obviously this is from a religious standpoint, and if it does not parallell your views, you aren't obliged by it.
As for whether this type of stem cell research conflicts with some religious beliefs, it doesn't look on the surface to conflict with the sacredness of a life, because it is taken from menstral fluid and not from a human conception, embrio, or fetus.
I find your post to be really offensive. I don't think religion is a basis for bashing people with different beliefs, and I don't think CP would tolerate the same discrimination against someone for their ethnicity or gender or something of that nature. I'm not trying to start a fight, but please try to be more respectful.
I'm not trying to hijack this thread into a religious debate, so please don't start one, if you have questions I would be happy to respond to anyone's PMs. This is all I'm going to say about the religious aspects of this breakthrough in this thread.

Agree with above. On this board, it is acceptable to bash based on religioius orientation. Not sure why. The unveiled contempt is quite noticable.
Also agree, stem cell research from non embryionic sources is ok. Even umbilical cords are quite useful for this (lots of those around)

Understandable. From my POV, since I'm not religious, I see it this way: if you can help someone without hurting someone else, that's an excellent thing. Especially overcoming permanent disabilities.

Maybe he meant "wackos" in the sense of the people that burn down labs, or kill scientists....and use religion as justification. But, maybe he didn't. In any event, this is exciting news as it takes most if not all of the controversy out of the stem cell debate. In my opinion, anyway.

One could argue that religious beliefs are considered too untouchable. Sam Harris argues that religious views should be as free to be questioned and challenged as views on any subject - such as history, science, morals.

You can't compare the statement "wacky religious people" to "wacky asians". They're different because people choose to be religious while asians do not.
Saying the statement "wacky religious people" is discrimination is like saying "stupid Vancouver Canucks fans" is discrimination. While not a polite thing to say, and it's probably offensive to someone, it's not discrimination.

As well, wacky Asians isn't the same as Asians are wacky.
Wacky religious people vs. religious people are wacky.
Now I need to find some of this wacky Menstrual fluid to rub all over myself so I can heal all my problems.
