They weren't investigating Barry Bonds.
They were investigating Victor Conte and his Balco labratories for selling steroids illegally. This was a company that was shipping HGH as well as steroids throughout the country and without prescriptions.
The FBI was in charge because of the interstate aspect of things which automatically make it a federal crime rather than a local state one. During the course of the investigation and through documents seized from the Balco offices, Bonds name appeared multiple times as both a purchaser and user of Balco's products and as a client of Greg Anerson his personal trainer. When this happened he was supoenaed to appear before a grand jury to testify what he had done while under FULL IMMUNITY from prosecution for anything illegal he had engaged in while a Balco client.
Instead of using his immunity and coming clean, he LIED to the grand jury about his involvment which in turn has led to his perjury and obstruction of justice charges.
I wish people would grasp this whole thing. The government is NOT prosecuting Barry Bonds because he took performance enhancing drugs, but because he refused to tell the truth about his involvement with a company that was illegally selling drugs. Even though he could of told them everything he kne and did without fear of any reprisals, he chose not too apparently.
he deserves everything he gets in this case including a couple years in a federal facility to think about what could have been.
