The Calgary Stampeder Football Club made the following roster moves today releasing Defensive Back Milo Lewis and Quarterback Tommy Jones.
The Calgary Stampeder Football Club will not be making a contract offer to Quarterback Marcus Crandell, Defensive Back William Fields, Receivers Albert Connell and Wane McGarity.
|
this hopefully means that Jeremaine Copeland or Chris Brazzell or both will be in red and White come next week.

Wow...big moves.
Milo Lewis was questionable at best - looks like they're going to make a move to upgrade there. Interesting about Fields.
McGarity and Connell - no big loss. Connell's always injured, and based on last season, McGarity sucked - could never catch the ball, make a big play, etc. Looks like they're planning on picking up players or they wouldn't have announced this.
No Crandell - not surprising. Good. No T. Jones is interesting - guess he showed no promise. Looks like Souza is their guy for the future. So who's at QB? Khari, Souza and Denison. Either the club is REALLY confident in Souza and/or Denison, or they're planning on obtaining another QB...hmmm....

I am relieved that McGarity will be gone. That guy was all flash. He dropped 50% of the balls thrown his way and his routes were very sloppy. When he did haul in the 5 yard pass, he would celebrate like it was the game winner in OT, even if it was in the 3rd quarter of a game we were losing 30-0.
Connell is a great talent but can't stay out of sick bay. I am sure he made pretty good money so we may be making a run at a big play guy.
William Fields is a bit of a surprise. I thought he was adequate.
Crandell gone? In related news, Mark McGuire took steroids.

I personally am sad to see Marcus go. He was the whipping boy of the fans & some of the media in Calgary. But look what he was up against, three head coaches in 3 years, 4 different OC's in 3 years (& a particularily insane OC who hated the run) & 4 different offensive systems. This past year with Matt Dunigan unfortunately has been a career killer for Marcus.
When he was being coached by George Cortez in 2001, he was Grey Cup MVP. I would've liked to see what he could've done under Steve Buratto & Bill Diedrich this year. I think he would've made a dynamite backup qb.

Exciting news in my books. This sends a clear message regarding just how aggressive the Stamps are going to be in the free agent market. I look for some very big signings.
The only guy I'm dissapointed to see leaving is Connell. Not that i disagree with the move given his injury problems, but, damn...I would have really like to see what this guy could've done with a healthy season.

That's what happens to players when they play head games with themselves like McGarity did last year. He had a great season in 2003 & I think he felt sorry for himself & moped thru the entire season last year.
His attitude was questionable last year. Somebody will pick him up but not for the $$$ he'll want.

I'm going to miss him too. I went to Edmonton in '01 for the Western Final, and he was awesome. I taped the game, too, and recently watched it....................he was deadly. I posted this thought here during the past regular season and was flamed badly. "It wasn't Crandell, it was Wally, Cortez, the receivers etc." All I can say is, watch the tape of the '01 Western Final. When Wally was interviewed at the half, with the Stamps up something like 28-7, he gushed about Marcus.
I think, like Barker in '03 and Dunigan last year, he was the victim of a very bad situation.
I hope this doesn't come back and bite the Stamps in the ass.

No doubt in '01 the guy was stellar. Grey Cup MVP material to boot.
While 3 coaches in 3 years seems like a good excuse on the surface, it doesn't make up for the countless horrible, horrible throws he made in the subsequent seasons. It wasn't coaching, it was QBing ability. The guy gets fairly hot for a half to win, then is cold for a few games...just not consistently good enough to win imo.

I blame all of the offensive systems (or lack thereof) that Marcus was in for those bad throws & decisions. Especially 2004. Mechanicaly & fundamentally, Marcus has all the tools. But if the system doesn't work, then that is the problem.

I knew with Barker steering the ship Crandell's days were numbered. It was a year too late but still good to see new blood coming to Calgary this year maybe we can win some games finally!

I'm not gonna disagree with you. He was brutal the past couple of years. Bad decisions, bad throws, bad reads. But, has he totally lost it? That's the question.

2004 was a disaster...no question the responsibility didn't lie with Marcus.
But other than that 6 game stretch in '01, I didn't see any potential, or any semblance of a good quarterback who can rise above questionable coaching to win a game. Just too many goddamn one-hoppers
but that's me

Sucks to see Wane go.
I thought he was really good.
We have some serious holes in the reciever department now.
Like Jiri said though, this opens the door for some big free agent signings!

I thought the guy displayed flashes of brilliance, but he seemed to play without heart most of the time.
Let's see who they bring in.

yea, i dunno...I figure he was outright release by the 'smos, brought in because we were desperate, and did nothing except for 6 good games. Would a change in environment help him? Possibly...good for him if he does. But I'm not gonna wait for him to become great when he's shown no improvement over the years. He's just a big pile of potential in Calgary.

Thats the key. I am not really going to judge anything they have done just yet.
I just thought that the McGarity non-signing was a bit of a surprise.
Is there a list of CFL Free Agents available?
