Is it Boston's Year For Championships?
I was wondering if anyone can come up with other cities that dominated so many sports at one time. They just seem to have it going on this year:
Red Sox(MLB) - Win the World Series in 4 straight
Patriots(NFL) - Currently 9-0 and favorite to win Superbowl
Celtics(NBA) - (Still early) 4-0 Start with the highest points for, and lowest points against
Revolotion(MLS)- Won Eastern finals and is the favorite for the finals.
They are talked about in 4 of the 5 top team sports in North America to win their respective sport right now.
Being only 24 I have never seen anything like it, can any of you expereinced guys remmeber when one city was doing so well in numerous team sports?
edit: make that 4-0 for the Celtics

I am sure one of BC and BU will have a shot at the NCAA hockey championship as well. The Bruins aren't playing horribly either. BC football is having a great season, but they won't win the national championship.

I know the Steelers and Pirates won championships in the same year. 1978 (SB was actually played in 1979) but 1978 season.
Pitt won their last National Championship in football in 1976, so they came close to having 3 in one season. The Steelers also won the Super Bowl in 76.

I was thinking Pittsburgh too. BTW, they won the '79 World Series (We are Family)

There's also the '86-'87 (?) Oilers/Eskimos (ugh... shudder). They were pretty dominant which inspired Edmonton's eous "City of Champoons" campaigne.

Well, if it's on Wikipedia, it MUST be true.
Yeah, the tornado was right around that time too, but I'm pretty sure the City of Champions ego-trip was inspired by the Oilers/Eskimos winning the Stanley/Grey Cups in the same year. I remember the big marketing blitz about it with Grant Fuhr and Gizmo Williams shaking hands to show off their rings with big sh*t-eating grins on their faces. I could be wrong though...

I meant MAJOR sports not the CFL where 6 of 8 teams make the playoffs.

The most recent city to have two championship winning teams in the same year was...Boston, in 2004 (Sox and Pats).
Here are all of the cities in North America that have ever had two championship teams in the same year: http://www.nuttyaboutsports.com/nort...e-champs.shtml
Not very many, and even fewer if you only count the "Big 4" leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL).
If you only include those 4 leagues, since 1967 (NHL expansion and the start of the Super Bowl era), it's only happened 4 times: 1969 - NYC (Mets & Jets); 1979 - Pitt (Steelers & Pirates); 1988 - LA (Lakers & Dodgers); and 2004 - Boston.

1987 - Eskimos beat Toronto 38-36; and the Oilers beat the Flyers 4-3.
But as HOOT stated, it doesnt count.

Well University of Florida won a Football and Basketball championship in the same year last year. I know its not pro sports but it actually is probably a more impressive feat.

###
there is always a grey area, what is a major sport? the only 2 major sports in canada are hockey and football. in the states poker is more popular then hockey. no matter the sport, if its a team representing a city(or college)its cool to have several teams win in one year.
going by the so called major 4 would mean only toronto could actuallly win more then one championship in a year....and none of us want that.

I watched the Celtics/Raptors game and man if the big three are healthy come playoff time look out. Garnett just deadly posting up, Pierce can create a shot for himself anytime and Allen is lights out from the 3pt line. With Detroit and Miami fading really the only thing standing in their way is Cleveland. Watched them the last couple of games and they are looking better than last year. The big run in the playoffs has upped the confidence of that club.
But yep put the Celtics in with a shot for sure!!!

NHL: In 1994, the NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup (beating the NJ Devils in round three). In 1993, the NY Islanders made the third round. In 1995, the Devils won the Cup.
NBA: In 1994, the NY Knicks made the finals but lost in seven games. In 1993 the Knicks had the league's best regular season record and lost to Chicago in the third round.
MLB: In 1994, the New York Yankees had the best record in the American League when baseball shut down because of the strike. In '95 the Yankees made the playoffs and '96 they won the World Series.
