Additionally, they don't use some three letter combinations that spell words that could be considered... inappropriate.

Good point. It'd be pretty funny to see someone driving around with the plate SEX 069 or something.

They're running out of combinations because a lot of the 17 million are off-limits.

I remember when the "Z" plates started appearing and I wondered what they were going to do when they ran out. Then, they started issuing combinations that had previously been off-limits because they formed regular words. I have a friend who bought a new vehicle last year whose plates start with HEX. I've seen a lot of other newer vehicles with plates whose letters spell normal words. Even then, some combinations will stay off-limits, like SEX, or ASS.

Also, I believe that all plates that start with the letter A are reserved for handicap plates, so that takes a good number out of the 17 million. As well, I believe that to avoid confusion with the number "0", the letter "O" isn't used, and to avoid confusion with the number "1", the letter "I" isn't used in standard issue.

I don't think that any number is off-limits since I have seen "666", "013", and "069", which would likely be the ones that wouldn't be issued, if they chose not to issue certain numbers.

According to this: http://www.infratrans.gov.ab.ca/INFT...tions-2003.pdf, there are almost 3 million vehicles currently registered in Alberta. Not all of them will have standard-issue 3-letter, 3-number plates, but most of them will. Over 25 years, it isn't hard to imagine how many millions of dead plates have piled up since they don't reissue old numbers, and many people don't transfer their plates when they get a new vehicle.

I remember about three-four years ago the the tranportation board (or whoever looks after vehicle licensing) said that anyone with the three letter combination BSE on their plate could turn it in for another at no charge.

Time to change from Oiler colors to Flames colors
(you can't tell me the last color scheme was not intentional).

I think that the article says something along the lines of adding some mountains, an oil rig and a cow? I'm sure that this is what we all had in mind to make this switch.

IIRC don't you get a free plate when you register a vehicle? I'm not going to be happy if we have to pay for new plates when they make this switch, just for the sake of making a switch!

I guess that kills the dream of anyone seeking out SEX-069 as their license plate.

I get a new plate almost everytime I register my vehicle, for parking ticket reasons. I've already burned 5 combinations I think. Sorry guys.

Probably not. Personalized plates have to be approved before being issued.

I remember when people were up in arms when BSE-### plates come out, saying it was in bad taste because of the Mad Cow cases we were having

Gah, just when I get one that's easy to remember. I don't want to puncture the partial holes in my front bumper either. :S

Yeah, I voted for red background, yellow (white would work too, like the old Arizona plates) numbers.
