He does what he is supposed to and he gets a ticket. The fact he is tasered is completely his fault. Plain and simple. All the rest of the comedy act in this thread is irrelevant. Don't want 68 yr old dufii to get tasered then suggest to them that they obey the law.

Yeah, the guideline in that post should all but end the discussion of if the officer did anything legally wrong. But at what point do we question the guidelines? It seems to me that an officer could potentially get away with a much bigger indiscretion under the provisions of these guidelines that what we're talking about here.

Well...I suggest you read this article from the smoking gun....

Age bears no indication on what an individual is able to do. Police officers are trained to treat people equal...meaning a 68 year old can attack you just as quick as an 18 year old.

Same response as my previous post, when do we question the attitude that any 68 year old can attack you a quick as any 18 year old? Does that REALLY reflect reality? Come on....
During a traffic stop, I COULD have a gun under the seat. But do I in reality? No, and no police officer ever treated me like I do.

I love how some people are railing the age factor. I'll tell you what... My grandfather (RIP) could've punched a persons head right off their body. But he was such a gentle guy that he could have also approached with a smile.
F'n seriously. 68, 88 108 or 18. Anybody driving away from a cop, then stopping and getting out to confront/speak to/initiate a make out session with a cop had better be aware that you have put the guy on high alert by:
A) DRIVING AWAY
B) STOPPING AND COMING TOWARD THE COP

Did you reach under your seat? Cause if you did I can promise you they would've treated like you did even if you were just grabbing your insurance information. Again, age means nothing. Your actions dictate a police officers response.

OK, well the article is a little sketchy here, but I bet the old guy didn't jump out of his truck, and act in any way that resembled an 18 year old.
The facts just aren't there to make this argument one way or the other, maybe this WAS Chuck Norris in disguise, or someone's ridiculously powerful grandfather, or some other anomaly. Or maybe he was like the vast majority of 60-somethings I've encountered. Slow and average to below average strength. Not enough facts.
I'm sure we'd all love to hear news of our grandfathers getting tasered during a traffic stop because he reached for his wallet in his jacket pocket too quickly (just like an 18 year old with a gun would!)

This is getting ridiculous.
The guy didn't get tazed for no reason. He didn't go through the motions and the RCMP officer just had a lapse of judgement. The guy drove away from the officer and then physically confronted him.
Like I've said, the fact that the guy drove off when he was getting a parking ticket has to put a HUGE doubt in the officer's mind about the old man. If he's willing to commit an actual crime to escape a simple parking ticket then who knows what his story is. He could have very easily had a warrent out of his arrest and panicked. If that's the case there's no telling what the guy is capable of.
It's probably not the most likely scenario for a 68 year old man, but then again most 68 year old men don't flee from the cops over traffic violations.

Yeah I got away from the original argument there, I'm actually questioning this statement:
"Age bears no indication on what an individual is able to do. Police officers are trained to treat people equal...meaning a 68 year old can attack you just as quick as an 18 year old."
Back on topic, I've never argued the fact that the guy should have been treated any different, aside from tasering him.

Yeah. About as much as a wife or mother of a cop wants to hear about him coming home in a box.

I don't think I'm being insensitive about that at all. It works both ways.

Next time you get pulled over, make it look like you are reaching under the seat for something, then view how the officer's attitude changes.

This argument is actually kind of depressing. You are volunteering to live in a police state.
Have we really become such a bunch of pussies?

Ahh, the good old "give your head a shake". Well played.
Anyway, my response was to that specific poster. He said earlier in the thread that he believes that speed cameras are a cash grab and that they do nothing for public safety, but he abides by them and believes people who don't are stupid because "it's the law". That's the depressing part.
As for the case at hand: I think the old guy broke the law -- fine. The real question for me is "did the cop use excessive force" (aka "break the law"). If he didn't, good for him and job well done. But if he did use excessive force I think we should be concerned about it, and I don't think we should just pass it off and say "well, the old coot had it coming", which is pretty much the consensus around here.

HAHA... Rouge... you lost any credibility there... Police state? You can't be serious... I don't get how this story is relevant to everything the comes along with a 'police state'- oppression, etc, etc. That's right, he was oppressed b/c he resisted arrest, assaulted a cop and got tasered for it... riiiight.
