Default Alberta to change license plates

Quote:
The Stelmach government is looking to give a facelift to Alberta's licence plate -- for the first time since 1983 -- including introducing a new design, overhauled colour scheme and possibly even a new theme to replace Wild Rose Country.

And in a move that's sure to irk many Albertans, the province is also considering reintroducing a front licence plate.
Couldn't come too soon. With all the nice looking plates out there, especially in the US, our plates look badly outdated and stuck in the 20th century.

But count me in as being very irked if they re-introduce front plates.

It would be awesome if they changed the theme to "All Hell for a Basement". But I'm sure that would offend some people.

I've never understood why Alberta is the only jurisdiction that I know of without front license plates. That's a no-brainer.

Well at least those additional royalties are going to something useful. While they're at it, someone should probably get to gold-plating the inside of the legislature building.

I might be in the minority, but I like our current plates. Nice and simple. It's a license plate, not a fashion accessory.

There are a lot of better things the government should be spending the money on.

NS has no front plates as well. Heck they only give you one plate for your car so you don't even have the option of putting a front plate on (not that you'd want to).

Here in Quebec there are no front licence plates either.

Plus, I don't know if it still exists in AB, but there's no need to put those registration stickers on the plate every year either.

Colour me surprised. I thought Alberta stood alone in the single plate. Still, it would be better to have two - easier identification of cars, certainly.

I wouldn't mind if Alberta introduced two or three designs that drivers could choose from. A mountain background, something cowboyish, and a cityscape. With all the Texans up here, I've noticed that there's a few different Texas license plates.

I think it was in the summer of 2004 when they dropped the front plate. Apparently it saves SGI $300,000 a year.

People seriously care about what their license plate looks like?

New plates would be nice. In the spirit of throw-back jerseys, lets go back to the ole bumblebee Black and Yellow.

Yep still need the sticker(s). Does it bug anyone else when people put the stickers in the wrong place or have just thrown stickers everywhere (looking very similar to my old scratch and sniff books)? The little diagram that comes with the stickers is really quite simple to follow. It baffles me that people can get it wrong.

Drives me crazy too; especially when somebody covers up the month sticker. I think cops should pull them over, give them a ticket for "failure to display proper plates", and force them to go get a new one.

We are due for new plates. We are running out of letters, and some of the plates I see from the original issue are in such bad shape; people should be forced to swap those out as well.

That was exactl my thought.
I've noticed that people will start a thread to comlain about just about anything, but this one really takes the cake.

Granted there is a legitimate beef with bringing back the front plate.

I don't think any charge actually actually fits the bill with the sticker. The proper plate section is generally directed at people who swap plates or just drive around with the plate from another vehicle. Invalid plate might fit but I think it would be a stretch.

Drivers manufactured their own plates when they were first introduced in the province the early 1900s, and the man issued the first plate slapped a broom handle to the rear of his car to represent the No. 1.
Most people, however, simply painted the numeral on the vehicle.
sweet idea, my number is 80085

Chalk me down as for new plates (let's ditch these pink ones) and against front ones. Uglifies cars and can be tricky to mount on some of today's new cars.

EDIT - pickout your favorite plate here: http://www.worldlicenseplates.com/

I like our current plates and slogan.
I remember the ugly yellow ones prior to 1983.

I had a newer car with very old/cracked plates, and got pulled over in Winnipeg because of it. The cop simply assumed the plates and/or car had to be stolen, so had me checked out. I wasn't impressed. Especially because this was 1AM on a Saturday night in Winnipeg on the weekend welfare cheques came out. Like hell that cop didn't have better things to do.

I had my plates replaced as soon as I got back to Calgary.

it's about time! I'm a collector of plates and 25 years is far too long for the same tags. Let's throw sme options in there. Tell me you wouldn't be in line for one that had a Flames logo on it? Here's a Florida example:

or one of my faves from Virginia:

Ours could be so much more interesting.
