Perhaps I am not that familiar with them, but I thought they were a one hit wonder...

Not quite, The Verve (and lead singer Richard Ashcroft, in particular) have a pretty dedicated following, and aside from Bittersweet Symphony, some fantastic songs that just didn't get a lot of airplay.

The Verve were a one hit wonder it North America. Quite the opposite in the UK. They've had several "hit" songs overseas.

the question is, will their new material be any good? The Verve had a couple of really great records..but since then Richard Ashcroft has been very hit and miss with his solo work.

It's too bad Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were such ******* and somehow manipulated it so that they recieved all the royalties and credit for "Bittersweet Symphony".

It crushed the members of the Verve (especially the lead singer).

Agree with the other posters, they had some great stuff that I like to listen to often.

Are you even a one hit wonder if your one hit is a cover song?

Ah, so technically I am right. I liked the song, but it fell victim to being overplayed and by the end of it's hit status I was very tired of it.

And how is this for irony? The girl beside me at work had it as her ring tone yesterday!

I never liked the song in the first place, but to me, it's a really tragic song despite anything because the Rolling Stones managed to get all money and royalties and even credits and awards (yes, they actually stood up to steal the award at an award show) given to them for a song they had nothing to do with.

The Verve thought they had the rights to the riff from another song, the Stones claimed it sounded too much like the original riff from one of their songs. The Stones get everything from it.

It's absolutely ridiculous and even though I dislike both bands, I really fomented a deep digust at the Rolling Stones for that act.

Never mind that. The rest of Urban Hymns is excellent. My favorite britpop (when I say britpop im thinking Oasisish) album.
