Check out the Ivan Hoe. It's about the classiest bar in Vancouver.

In all seriousness, the Cambie in Gas Town was my favourite hangout when I lived there (met my current gf there), but it's not open late on account of a hostile in the same building.

It's friendly and a good place to meet people if you are not into dancing. The bench-like tables promote intermingling.

And the deterrent is...? Haha actually I cant even remember that. Usually by the time we'd get there I'd had already pumped back about four or five Revs and a couple shots of SoCo, I didnt even know what my name was anymore let alone what song was playing. It's the same strategy I employ now when the girl drags me out to the country bars.

We're going to Vancouver two weekends from now... scored some cheap tickets during the Westjet $39 sale Our plan:

1) Arrive in Vancouver
2) Immediately drive to Seattle
3) Shop at outlet malls
4) Watch Seahawks/Bears game
5) Drive back to Vancouver to catch flight to Calgary

We're also heading to to Van next week.

We are staying downtown (no car) and will be doing some if not all of the following things.

1. Eating a boatload of sushi.
2. Checking out the Aquarium / Stanley Park.
3. Visit the Museum of Anthropology (UBC) and or the regular Museum, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden and a couple art galleries.
4. Swing by Gastown and Granville for some shopping and dining.
5. Laughing at every single Canuck fan I see.

I've often heard that Vancouver has the best sushi. Ironically, some of the worst Sushi I've ever had came from restaurants in Vancouver, mainly due to lack of freshness.

My theory is that there are so many sushi places to choose from in Vancouver, some have problems getting enough customers to use up inventory. As a result, fish quality is less fresh.

So pick one with a lineup!

Since it hasn't been suggested, I am gonna have to recommend a relaxing afternoon at the Amsterdam (especially considering the rain - it will lift your spirits ). If it is your kinda thing, it is a very relaxed atmosphere, and the closest you will get the the real Amsterdam. Only 2.50 to relax, have a smoke, and maybe meet some cool people. If you are more health conscious, I would recommend Mark Emery's joint next door (aren't I funny), where 5 dollars will net you all the time you want with a volcano, the healthiest and most expensive way ($800) to do ur thang.

I know "you're as old as you feel", and if you saw me I could pass for 20, plus my gf's only 22 so I still end up at the 19-25 bars with her sometimes and I still fit right in, but it still depresses me

I'm in exactly the same boat. 27 but look 20 with a gfriend who is 23.

Anyway, I can't believe I didn't mention it earlier but the cambie. If you want to go to a kind of trashy place filled w/ lots of drunk people of all ages /styles just having a crazy good time go there. If you are looking for class don't go there.

This is probably the only reason to go to Vancouver. I hate going over their for concerts, hockey games or birthdays.

Commercial Drive, W 4th (Kitsilano), Main St (South of Broadway) are all funky areas that aren't too touristy, but more filled with cafe's, restaurants, pubs and such. I don't think Granville Is is too overrated, the market is really cool and agreeing with Vanflamesfan, it is far more special than Calgary's Eau Claire.

Granville St is a pretty fun bar/club strip on just about any night.

Wow, I never knew he was on Iron Chef, and he actually beat Morimoto!

I just knew him as the guy on those annoying White Spot ads.

Eau Claire market is a huge failure. Even City officials will state this. I've heard that they are going to try renovating it and getting it to be the place it was supposed to be from the beginning.
Eau Claire was setup to act as Calgary's version of Granville Island
Grandville Island was setup to act as Vancouvers version of Pike Place Market (In Seattle)
Pike Place > Granville > Eau Claire
