Isles bounce back with 4-1 victory
COLUMBUS, OH - Miroslav Satan added to his point total getting two assists in the victory.
Rumblings out of the Island -- primarily out of the mouth of Islanders' GM -- had big moves on the horizon for the New York club. It was apparent that the general manager was unhappy with the team's performance and one could hardly blame him.
The team had lost two straight, albeit one of them a one-goal game to the Panthers on Tuesday night, but a loss still.
It'd be foolish however, to believe that the rumours were sparked by the two-game loss when a simple look back at the Islanders' season would reveal a rather medicore record highlighted by inconsistency.
You'd have to go as far back as October to find the last time the Islanders were able to string together more than 4 victories without a loss in between.
"We know we've been playing bad for a big part of the season," Hull said. "We had a team meeting after the game last night, and hopefully we can put everything behind us now and just play hockey."
Play hockey, they certainly did on Wednesday as they fired 36 shots at Columbus goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff who was recently taken off the injured reserve by the Jackets.
Andrew Brunette and Miroslav Satan both finished with two helpers and two points, while Eric Daze, Andrew Cassels, Willie Mitchell, and Shayne Corson added goals to lead the Islanders to a 4-1 victory in Columbus.
Al MacInnis iced a solid 22 minutes in play-time while rugged defenceman Adam Foote led the way with 29 minutes in ice-time.
Despite playing one shift only, rookie forward Brad Boyes added an assist on Corson's 2nd period goal which came on the powerplay as the Islanders coach decided to try something different.
Also getting an assist was defenceman Brian Rafalski who set up the game's first goal only 6 seconds in when he sent Miroslav Satan in off the opening face-off who made a quick move on Jackets defenceman Richard Matvichuk before dropping a pass between his legs to the trailer Eric Daze, who rifled home his 26th of the season.
With the win the Islanders snap their 2-game losing skid and remain in 6th spot in the Gretzky Conference, 2 points behind the Rangers and Senators, and 2 points ahead of the surging Capitals.
"With the conference being as tight as it is right now, we can't afford to play the way we have been for most of the season," Damphousse said. "Everyone is coming on strong right now, and it's surprising that we're where we are right now considering how inconsistent we've been, but we know if we keep up that kind of play, we won't be here a few weeks down the road."
The Islanders will get a day of rest before they face the same Panthers that beat them on Tuesday evening, on Friday on the Island.
