Came from a well to do / upper-class family.
That is the entire point. He came from a 'good family', with a good education and money in the bank, and gave it all up and tried to live a life without ego or status. This is his story.

I've read the book, and thought it was pretty good. It was a short read though. But I guess details were scarce. I'll have to check out the movie.

I'll be seeing this one soon. I read the book, and couldn't put it down. A truly amazing story. The author reflects in the book, about his similarities with the main character and his thought process. He (author)tells a short story about one of his own adventures, that goes a bit wrong. It is quite gripping as well. I recomend the book highly, and hope the movie lives up. sounds like it does.

Also worth noting is that the film is running in a limited fashion and while it is playing in a few theatres in Calgary, I would urge everyone to try to catch it quickly before it disappears from the big screen in Calgary.

I'm not generally a big Sean Penn fan - don't know why, really... there's just something about him that rubs me the wrong way - but that's OK because he's behind the camera. I really like the main actor though, Emile Hirsch. He's been underrated to this point in underrated movies - The Girl Next Door (2004) was actually a pretty cheeky send-up of the whole teeny-bopper genre and last year's Alpha Dog had several strong performances (Justin Timberlake not withstanding), not least of which came from Hirsch. This sounds like an intriguing story and I have been meaning to check it out, just been too busy with other sheeyte.

I went and saw this movie yesterday, and I wasn't disappointed. I've never read the book and was a bit skeptical going into the movie theater, but when the movie was over I was very glad I went and saw this movie. The acting in this movie is phenomenal, and the story line is pretty detailed considering the events that happened to Chris. I would definitely recommend this movie.

It's funny, I thought it was a really good movie and that it was very well acted, but after watching it I found I had very little to talk about with it. I had no knowledge of his story, or the general plot of the movie before I went to see it, but I kind of suspected throughout that it was a true story. In the end I just thought that it represented the characters in such a realistic and balanced fashion that there wasn't a whole lot to dissect, and it was pretty much just what you would expect to be the case in that kind of situation. I didn't feel it was a monumental film by any means, but it was a good, honest, interesting story which was well acted.

Interesting I really didn’t think this movie was very good at all, there where some very strong parts but some very weak ones as well. In the end all it was to me was a misguided kid running away from his parents divorce and mistreatment. He just chose to live in the wild instead of the streets

Watch it again. That's my only suggestion.
Christopher McCandless, whatever you may think of his decision to take off, had some very interesting things to say. His perspective on life, and where he went wrong are very interesting to think about.
I guess each person will react in their own personal way to this movie. I thought it was just fantastic and an Oscar-worthy performance from Emile Hirsch.

To further my point:
Christopher McCandless: I read somewhere... how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong... but to feel strong.
Christopher McCandless: Rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness... give me truth.
Christopher McCandless: Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past.

Can't understand why it's showing in select theatres only. I have no desire to drive to the NE end of town to see it. It would be nice if it was showing in a theatre in the south. Oh well, i'll catch it when it comes out on DVD.
